Rays placed RHP Jeremy Hellickson on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow injury. Hellickson is recovering from arthroscopic elbow surgery and isn't expected back until late May or early June. Jake Odorizzi will fill in as the team's No. 5 starter.

Jeremy Hellickson (elbow), expected to return in May, has been given a new timetable that includes a June 1 target date. Hellickson had been shooting for a mid-May return, but now says late-May is his "best-case scenario." He's coming off a long-tossing session Wednesday that "felt really good." Hellickson, the Rookie of the Year award winner in 2011, underwent arthroscopic surgery last month to remove "loose bodies" from his elbow. Jake Odorizzi is the favorite to fill the No. 5 spot until he returns. AL-only owners will want to file his name.

Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) long-tossing session Wednesday was a success. He flung 25 balls from 45-60 feet. "Very encouraging," Hellickson said afterwards. "It felt really good." Recovering from minor arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, Hellickson is expected to be shelved until mid- to late-May.

Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday. It's the first time he's thrown in six weeks. Tampa Bay expects the right-hander to be sidelined until mid- to late-May after undergoing minor arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow late last month. Jake Odorizzi is the heavy favorite to fill the No. 5 spot until he returns.

Rays avoided arbitration with RHP Jeremy Hellickson by agreeing to a one-year, $3.625 million contract. It was Hellickson's first year of arbitration eligibility. The right gets a big salary boost even after putting up a 5.17 ERA this past season. He'll fill the No. 5 starter role for the Rays in 2014.

Jeremy Hellickson didn't allow a run but pitched just one inning in Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox. Rays manager Joe Maddon made it clear going into the elimination game that he wouldn't be shy about going to his bullpen early, and he sure meant it. Hellickson got through a clean first inning but was then pulled after two walks and a single to start the second. Jamey Wright managed to escape the frame without a run scoring. Maddon ended up using every one of his relievers and also starter Matt Moore, but it wasn't enough.

Rays manager Joe Maddon announced that Jeremy Hellickson will start Game 4 of the ALDS against the Red Sox, if necessary. That's assuming he's not needed in relief before then. Maddon believes that Hellickson, who held a 3.44 ERA and 0.98 WHIP against the Red Sox in three starts this season, is a better matchup. Archer put up a 5.19 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in his two outings versus Boston in 2013.

Jeremy Hellickson struggled in Friday's loss to the Blue Jays, surrendering six runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings. Hellickson's one redeeming quality in the start was that he racked up five strikeouts. His defense certainly didn't do him any favors in this one, making three errors which contributed to three unearned runs. Despite his 12-10 record, the 26-year-old right-hander has taken a major step backwards this season, registering a 5.17 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 135/50 K/BB ratio in 174 innings. Once seemingly a fixture in the Rays rotation, Hellickson may have to earn his spot next Spring.

Jeremy Hellickson allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings in a loss against the Rangers on Tuesday. Hellickson allowed a leadoff home run to Ian Kinsler, and it didn't get much better from there. He allowed two homers on the night, the second straight game he's allowed two homers. Hellickson's ERA is at 5.23 and at this point it's hard to see the Wild Card hopeful Rays continue to roll with him. Jake Odorizzi, who started for Triple-A Durham in the Triple-A National Championship on Tuesday, could be a candidate to replace him.
