Martinez went one-for-four with a 408-foot solo home run to deep right center in Detroit's 4-0 victory over Minnesota. He also struck out later in the game. Pitchers will soon catch up to Martinez after his outstanding 2014 season, so don't expect him to maintain a high average. But the power is real.

Martinez will play right field for the Tigers on an everyday basis for the first time in his career. He has spent his previous four big-league seasons in right field. His defense isn't exactly stellar, but his offense is and he's out to prove that his breakout 2014 season was real. He'll hit in the middle of a powerful Tigers' lineup and should deliver strong power numbers, even if his batting average regresses over the year as opposing pitchers pay more attention to him. The Tigers start the season at home against the Twins and then travel to Cleveland to end the week.

Martinez agreed to a one-year contract with the Tigers on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. After the Astros cut bait in March, Martinez joined the Tigers on a minor league deal and went on to slash .315/.358/.553 with 23 home runs and 76 RBI, numbers which surprised even the most optimistic of his supporters. While his 19.5% HR/FB rate and .389 BABIP were abnormally high, Martinez has locked himself into the starting right fielder role and the middle of the lineup for Detroit, so he should be a highly useful fantasy option even with the expected regression.

Martinez was 2-of-3 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's win over the Indians. Martinez has been on a roll, slugging three homers with eight RBI over his last five games alone. With a .305/.350/.557 slash line to go with 22 home runs and 71 RBI, the 27-year-old outfielder has become an integral part of Detroit's lineup this season.

Martinez had another big night at the dish going 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run, and four RBI in the Tigers' 7-2 win over the Royals on Friday. What a boon Martinez has been for Detroit. He popped his 21st homer, a two-run shot and then added a two-run triple to provide most of the Tigers' offense. He's now hitting a solid .305 and has driven in 69 runs on the year.

Martinez went 3-for-5 with a double and one run scored in Friday's victory over the White Sox. Martinez continues his roll at the dish, as the 27-year-old outfielder is now batting .480 (12-for-25) with four multi-hit efforts during his last six games. With 17 homers, 26 doubles and an outstanding .908 OPS over 94 games, it is now completely safe to call 2014 a breakout campaign for Martinez.

Martinez swatted his 17th homer of the season in Tuesday's win over the Rays. Martinez's eighth-inning blast broke a 4-4 tie that gave the Tigers a short-lived lead. He's no longer raking in the extra-base hits at the same rate he did in June and July, but Martinez has at least homered twice and driven in four runs over his last five games.

Martinez went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk Thursday against the Pirates. It was his first homer since Aug. 2. The multi-hit outing -- a relative rarity for Martinez since his red-hot stretch in June and early July -- nudged his average back over .300; he'd fallen to .299 for the first time since mid-June following Tuesday's 0-for-4.

Martinez is out of the lineup Wednesday vs. the Pirates, Matthew Mowery of The Oakland Press reports. Martinez has endured a sharp correction to his batting average over the last two weeks, batting 11-for-49 (.224) to bring him below the .300 mark for the season. The Tigers willingness to trade away Austin Jackson at the deadline will give Martinez a decent amount of job security, but don't be surprised if his numbers tail off from here following his unsustainable early-season production.

J.D. Martinez has returned to the Tigers starting lineup on Friday after missing a pair of games with a quad injury. The 26-year-old is enjoying a breakout season, where he's slashing .327/.363/.606 with 13 long balls and 44 RBI in just 208 at-bats. Fantasy owners can safely have him active for the weekend.
