Jake Arrieta turned in his worst start of the year against the Athletics on Friday, surrendering four runs on four hits in just 5 2/3 innings.
Arrieta struck out three and walked two in the rough outing. Eric Sogard tagged him for a two-run homer in the second inning, and Josh Reddick added a solo blast to drive Arrieta from the game in the sixth. After a strong start to the season, Arrieta is now 1-2 with a less than impressive 4.45 ERA over 30 1/3 innings. It won't get any easier for him either, as he's set to take on the Yankees in New York next week.

Jake Arrieta took his first loss after giving up five runs in 4 1/3 innings Saturday against the Angels.
After three starts in which he walked a total of four batters, Arrieta had some command problems tonight. He walked three, threw a wild pitch and missed with 39 of his 86 pitches. He will have nights like this, so he's not a reliable mixed-league starter.

Jake Arrieta pitched well in a no-decision Monday, giving up four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6 2/3 frames in a 10-4 win over the White Sox.
Arrieta was taken deep by A.J. Pierzynski, but it's another nice outing for the right-hander, as he now boasts a 2.66 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 16/4 K/BB ratio over 20 1/3 innings. It won't continue, but Arrieta is worthy of starting in mixed leagues in ideal matchups right now. Unfortunately, he won't have one this weekend in Anaheim.

Jake Arrieta allowed four runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings of Wednesday's 10-inning loss to the Yankees.
Coming off an Opening Day outing where he held the Twins to just two hits across seven scoreless innings, Arrieta appeared in for a nightmare night after he allowed a leadoff double to Derek Jeter before serving up a two-run homer to Curtis Granderson, but he was able to settle down. Arrieta won't come close to the kind of outing he had against the Twins most times out, but is looking like he could settle into some deep-league value. He'll get the White Sox in Chicago next Tuesday.

Jake Arrieta shut out the Twins for seven innings, allowing just two hits, to win for the Orioles on Friday.
Arrieta may have had the worst track record of anyone drawing an Opening Day start this year (though former Oriole Bruce Chen has something to say about that), but the talent is there for him to take a step forward, as he showed today. It'd help if he stops walking a batter every other inning. He still pitches in the AL East and Camden Yards, so mixed leaguers shouldn't go claiming him based on the one strong outing.

Jake Arrieta will start Opening Day against the Twins on Friday.
An expected decision, even though Arrieta gave up five runs on eight hits over five innings in his final tuneup on Saturday. The 26-year-old right-hander increased his strikeout rate last season before undergoing surgery in August to remove a bone spur in his right elbow, but he still has work to do with his control and command. It's tough to recommend him as a fantasy option calling the American League East home.

Jake Arrieta was clocked in the 94-95 MPH range in Saturday's game against the Pirates.
He topped out at 97 MPH. Of Arrieta's 82 pitches, 55 were for strikes, and he allowed six runs over five innings. Despite his recent struggles, both Arrieta and Brian Matusz are projected to open the year in Baltimore's rotation.

Jake Arrieta picked up a win over the Nats after allowing one run in five innings Saturday.
Arrieta's spot in the Baltimore rotation is looking pretty secure. Brian Matusz stepped in as a big-time challenger, but he can slide right into the injured Zach Britton's place.

Jake Arrieta surrendered four runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Pirates.
Arrieta ended up with four strikeouts and no walks, so it wasn't all bad. Four of the hits off him were singles, with a two-run double from Clint Barmes doing much of the damage. Arrieta remains a strong candidate for Baltimore's rotation.

Jake Arrieta (elbow) expects to be at 100 percent health when spring training opens next month.
Arrieta threw to a catcher on Monday for the first time since having a bone spur removed from his throwing elbow in August. "I'm feeling just as good or better than I've ever felt," the right-hander said Wednesday. He is locked into a rotation spot for 2012 despite posting a pedestrian 5.05 ERA and 93/59 K/BB ratio in 119 1/3 innings last season for the Orioles.
