Orioles optioned RHP Jake Arrieta to Triple-A Norfolk.
The 27-year-old right-hander has posted a brutal 6.63 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 20/16 K/BB ratio in 19 major league innings this season. Arrieta will try to work on his control issues against a lesser level of competition.

Jake Arrieta walked five but allowed just one run in five innings as the Orioles beat the Rays on Tuesday.
Arrieta allowed a solo home run to Desmond Jennings leading off the game but kept the Rays off the scoreboard for the next five innings, striking out seven batters in the process. The righty has now walked 11 batters in 15 innings. His next start comes Sunday against the Dodgers.

Jake Arrieta allowed three runs over five innings in the Orioles' win over the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Arrieta was serviceable but not stellar, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out just two. He threw 69 pitches before his outing was cut short by a rain delay in the fifth inning, robbing him of a chance to register a quality start. His next chance will come Tuesday against the Rays.

Jake Arrieta has officially been named to the Orioles' rotation.
He'll start the fourth game of the season, but only because the Orioles are giving Chris Tillman (abdomen) an extra day of recovery. Arrieta won a rotation spot by posting a 1.56 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 17 1/3 innings this spring. Brian Matusz will open the year in the bullpen.

Jake Arrieta is expected to start the fourth game of the season for the Orioles.
The O's haven't officially named him the No. 5 starter yet, but Arrieta has been the clear favorite for a while. He is moving up to pitch the fourth game in order to allow Chris Tillman (abdomen) an extra day of recovery. Arrieta won a rotation spot by posting a 1.56 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 17 1/3 innings this spring. Brian Matusz will open the year in the bullpen.

Jake Arrieta is viewed as the front-runner to win the fifth spot in the Orioles' rotation.
Arrieta might have sewed up the spot with nine strikeouts over six scoreless innings Thursday. He's now unscored upon in his last 14 2/3 innings and overall has a 1.56 Grapefruit League ERA with 16 strikeouts over 17 1/3 frames. Of Arrieta's main competitors -- Steve Johnson, Brian Matusz and Zach Britton -- Matusz is pitching the best, but he'll likely wind up in the bullpen.

Jake Arrieta pitched six scoreless innings as the Orioles and Pirates played to a 0-0 tie in 10 innings Thursday.
One doesn't see that happen often. Arrieta may have moved into the lead for the fifth spot in Baltimore's rotation with his nine-strikeout performance tonight. With Zach Britton struggling last time out, we're put Steve Johnson second in the mix and Brian Matusz third.

Jake Arrieta pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings versus the Blue Jays in Baltimore's 3-1 victory Saturday.
Arrieta allowed three hits, walked three and struck out two. The rotation candidate has a 2.38 ERA in 11 1/3 innings for the spring, though the 7/6 K/BB ratio isn't very good. This is one battle that could go down to the wire.

Jake Arrieta pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five, against the Pirates on Monday.
Arrieta gave up three runs and posted a 0/3 K/BB ratio in 2 2/3 innings over his first two appearances, so he needed this strong outing today. He remains a candidate for the fifth spot in Baltimore's rotation, but he has plenty of work left to do.

Jake Arrieta yielded three runs in 1 2/3 innings before being removed from his start against the Yankees on Wednesday.
Arrieta has an uphill climb to win a spot in Baltimore's rotation after struggling as a starter last year. He has a better chance of making the team as a reliever.
