Hernandez was called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
The Giants needed a reserve who can play center field with Gregor Blanco (shoulder) landing on the DL, and that's where Hernandez has played primarily with Sacramento this season. Hernandez's .302 average and .382 OBP with Sacramento this season are supported by solid plate discipline (52:77 BB:K), but he's been caught stealing 13 times in 33 attempts and the power is negligible.

Hernandez is batting .346 (9-for-26) with two doubles and four stolen bases this spring.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez was brought in as a non-roster invite after being released by the Pirates. He has been swinging a hot bat, and exhibiting his great speed in 11 spring games. Hernandez is putting pressure on Giants' management to consider him for the club's fifth and final outfielder spot. If he were to make the 25-man roster, he wouldn't start and would likely be used primarily as a pinch-runner. But given the injury history of the Giants' starting centerfielder options (Denard Span and Angel Pagan), it wouldn't be inconceivable to see Hernandez have some deep league value at some point this season.

Hernandez will elect to become a free agent, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez managed to record five plate appearances with the Pirates before finding his way back to Triple-A Indianapolis in the beginning of August. In 340 appearances with the Pirates Triple-A affiliate this season, Hernandez posted a .288/.365/.406 slash line to go along with six home runs and 17 stolen bases.

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gorkys Hernandez is expected to return from a shoulder injury for Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Hernandez has just five at-bats in eight major-league games this season, having spent most of the year with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hernandez went hitless in three at-bats Sunday against the Braves. The outfielder offers stellar defensive skill but little in the way of offense. Hernandez got the start in part because Pittsburgh rested Gregory Polanco with a righthander on the mound. The Bucs are expected to face just one righty in Week 14, likely limiting Hernandez to pinch-running and defensive replacement opportunities.

Hernandez was officially called up from Triple-A in advance of Sunday's game, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports. As expected, Hernandez will come up from Triple-A, taking the roster spot vacated by Jose Tabata.

Hernandez will be called up from Triple-A on Sunday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports. Jose Tabata was DFA'd on Sunday, so Hernandez will come up from Triple-A to fill his spot on the 25-man roster. Hernandez is hitting .279/.366/.407 with 23 RBI in 63 Triple-A games.

Hernandez was assigned to Pittsburgh's minor league camp, DKonPittsburghSports.com reports. Hernandez will likely add depth at Triple-A and need a few injuries before he'd get a chance at the majors.

Hernandez, a non-roster invitee, is absent from spring training because of a visa problem, Tom Singer of MLB.com reports. So long as he makes it to camp within the next week or two, Hernandez should still have an opportunity to compete for a role as a reserve outfielder.

Hernandez signed a minor league deal with the Pirates on Monday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Bill Brink reports. His contract comes with an invite to major league spring training, but after failing to hit much at stops with the Triple-A affiliates of the Royals and White Sox last season, Hernandez is unlikely to see much major league action in 2015.
