Hernandez -- who is filling in for the injured Denard Span (hip) -- was being deployed in the leadoff spot over the past few games, but an 0-for-9 slump forced the veteran into the eight-hole Friday. Span was used as a pinch-hitter Friday, signaling an imminent return to the bench for Hernandez.

Hernandez went 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, four RBI and a run in Tuesday's win over Arizona.

EDGE Analysis

If you expected production like that out of Hernandez in the leadoff spot, you should play the lottery (or DFS). Once a somewhat well-regarded prospect, he can now be considered a journeyman, and when the Giants' outfield is fully healthy, he's the fourth choice for playing time.

This should come as no surprise considering the Giants let both Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco walk this offseason. Hernandez fits the bill as a classic fourth outfielder due to his plus speed and defense. In 503 plate appearances with Triple-A Sacramento last season, he batted .302 with eight homers and 20 steals. The home runs were likely inflated by the hitter-friendly nature of the PCL ballparks, but speed and contact are translatable to the majors.

Hernandez has entered a platoon at center with Denard Span. The former has seen the bulk of starts this week with the Giants facing three left-handed starters in their first four games. Usually the left-handed side of the platoon sees the majority of starts, so Span is still the guy to own in standard formats. With Edwin Jackson slated to start Friday, Hernandez will likely be used off the bench.

Hernandez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.

While Hernandez didn't get a hit in his only plate appearance, he could see some playing time if Pence is forced to miss any time. The Giants didn't report the severity of Pence's injury during the game, and they remained pretty mum about it after as well, describing it only as a hamstring injury. Considering Pence had missed a significant chunk of time this season after having surgery on his hamstring, this could be a more serious issue than is being reported. If that were the case then Hernandez would likely step into everyday playing time, at least until rosters expand Sept. 1. The 28-year-old was slashing .302/.382/.421 with 20 steals at Triple-A Sacramento this season, so there could be some deep league intrigue.
