Freddy Sanchez threw to first base Wednesday for the first time since undergoing surgery in August to repair the torn labrum in his right shoulder. Sanchez also ran the bases and fielded grounders. His back flared up earlier this week, but the status of his surgically-repaired shoulder is the bigger concern. As of now, the 34-year-old second baseman expects to be ready for Opening Day.

Freddy Sanchez is currently sidelined at Giants' camp after his back "flared up." Giants manager Bruce Bochy called it a "hiccup" and the hope is that Sanchez can participate in workouts in the next day or two. The 34-year-old is currently working his way back from August surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and expects to be ready for Opening Day.

Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) began hitting off a tee Monday. "Swinging's not going to be a problem at all," said Sanchez, who is coming back from surgery in August to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Of course, the real test will be how the shoulder responds to increased throwing. Sanchez has lengthened the distance of his tosses to 75-80 feet and he'll increase the frequency of his workouts from three days per week to five beginning next week. While the 34-year-old is encouraged by his progress, he's not sure if he will be able to play when the Cactus League schedule begins.

Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) began a throwing program two weeks ago. "I'm doing great. I'm throwing. I'm out to 60 feet now, and the shoulder's coming along great," said Sanchez, who underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in August. "I'm feeling really good." Sanchez is quickly regaining strength in the shoulder and plans to begin throwing in early January. While the veteran second baseman could be a bit limited at the start of spring training, he's confident he'll be ready when the regular season begins.

Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) is expected to expand his workouts in 2-4 weeks. Sanchez underwent season-ending surgery in August to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He is currently doing lower body workouts, but should get back to baseball activities within a few weeks. The Giants expect him to be ready for spring training, but they will likely secure an insurance policy for their middle infield this winter.

Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) is expected to begin baseball-related activities in December. Sanchez had surgery in August to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Although the 33-year-old is expected to enter spring training at 100 percent, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Giants pursue an insurance policy over the offseason. Sanchez has averaged just 94 games played over the last three seasons.

Though Freddy Sanchez "is fully expecting to be ready for opening day," Giants manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean have discussed the need for insurance at second base next season. Sanchez had successful surgery on his right shoulder last month to repair a torn labrum. "I think you have to cover yourself," Bochy said. "Brian and I have talked about that already. It's not the first surgery on his shoulder, either. No question, you need a plan there." Sanchez will make $6 million next year. "I've played with a bad shoulder before," he said.

Freddy Sanchez had successful surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday to repair a torn labrum. Sanchez had hoped to play through a separated shoulder, but he and the team eventually decided that surgery was the best course of action. The Giants expect Sanchez to be ready for spring training next season.
