Gattis has had a power surge lately, as he's homered in six of his last 13 games to raise his slugging percentage to .495 on the year. The slugger needs four more bombs the rest of the way to pass his career-high of 27 homers. In addition, he's hit at least 21 long balls in each of his four seasons in the majors.

The 30-year-old's 23 homers qualify as the second-best total of his career, with his high-water mark of 27, set last season, remaining within reach.

With the Astros adding Yulieski Gurriel to the roster a week ago, Gattis has seen his opportunities at DH take a hit, but he's made up for it by logging more starts at catcher. Expect that trend to continue the rest of the way, as Gattis makes up for his defensive deficiencies behind the plate by providing rare power at the position. Meanwhile, Jason Castro figures to see his at-bats decline as a result of Gattis taking on more catching duties, though Castro will serve as the backstop in Sunday's series finale.

The veteran backstop opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second that drove in Carlos Correa, his fifth RBI over the last three games. Gattis has also hit safely in six of his last eight contests and is enjoying his best month of the season, slashing .308/.365/.526 with five doubles, four homers and 11 RBI over 78 at-bats in August.

Gattis is out of the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Gattis will sit after starting the past three games, opening up the DH spot for rookie A.J. Reed. In 23 contests since the All-Star break, Gattis is slashing a formidable .287/.333/.540 with five homers and 11 RBI, which likely gives him a fairly secure hold on DH duties.

The veteran's bat has caught fire in August, as he's now slashing .311/.340/.467 with four doubles, a homer and five RBI. Gattis is also 6-for-10 over the last two games and has raised his average 17 points since Aug. 1.

EDGE Analysis

Gattis' batting average (.229) might not be pleasing to the eye, but his ability to create runs with his power overshadows it. The 29-year-old is on pace to hit over 20 home runs for the fourth-consecutive season, even though his RBI total (43) isn't necessarily reflective of that.

Jason Castro will start behind the plate as Gattis gets the night off. Gattis, who's hitting a mere .226 for the season, has shown some minor improvement at the plate recently, having gone 12-for-46 (.261) over the last 14 games.

Gattis got the start at DH on Sunday and went 3-for-4 in an 11-0 loss to the Tigers.

EDGE Analysis

He was the only Houston hitter to have much success on the day. In fact, it was Gattis' first game with more than two hits since a 4-for-5 performance back on June 3. He's now hitting .304 (7-for-23) over his last seven games with four homers and six RBI, but Gattis also struck out nine times over that stretch so don't expect his hot streak to continue, at least when it comes to his batting average.

Gattis is not in the lineup for Saturday's matchup against Detroit.

EDGE Analysis

Gattis will be replaced in the lineup by Preston Tucker who's getting the nod in the DH hole and batting second. Gattis has found his power stroke in recent days, homering four times and collecting six RBI in his last five games.
