EDGE Analysis
After indicating Monday that Chris Carter, who walloped a career-best 41 homers last season, wouldn't be tendered a contract for 2017, the Brewers didn't wait long to find a replacement for him in the lineup at first base. In an outside-the-box move, Milwaukee elected to bring aboard Thames, a 30-year-old converted outfielder who last appeared in the MLB with the Mariners in 2012 before developing into one of the more fearsome power hitters in the Korea Baseball Organization for NC Dinos over the last three seasons. In his 388 games in the KBO, a league that compares favorably to the high minors, Thames slashed a ridiculous .348/.450/.720 while smacking 124 homers in 388 games. The recent history of players transitioning from the KBO to MLB has been a mixed bag, but the Brewers are gambling that Thames will follow the path of the Pirates' Jung-Ho Kang rather than that of the Twins' Byung-Ho Park. The biggest obstacle he'll face will be adjusting to the higher-caliber pitching and velocity of the majors, but his previous experience in the big leagues may confer him an advantage in that regard over previous Korean imports.

Astros claimed OF Eric Thames off waivers from the Orioles. Thames was designated for assignment by the O's on Sunday after struggling at Triple-A Norfolk. The 26-year-old outfielder has shown flashes of potential, though, and is a worthy flier for the rebuilding Astros.

Mariners designated OF Eric Thames for assignment. Thames was removed from Seattle's 40-man roster to make room for the return of Franklin Gutierrez. Thames has a lifetime .250/.296/.431 line in the majors and was hitting .295 with seven homers at Triple-A Tacoma this year. He'll likely catch on somewhere else soon.

Mariners optioned OF Eric Thames to Triple-A Tacoma. Thames batted .267 (8-for-30) with three doubles and five RBI in 16 games this spring. There's no room for him in Seattle's crowded outfield right now, but he could be an option at some point this year.

Eric Thames ripped a solo shot Monday, accounting for the only run in a win over the Twins. It's all Felix Hernandez needed, as he dominated the hapless Twins lineup. Thames has batted .274 with four homers over 23 games since arriving in Seattle.
