Farquhar was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. The Mariners made a series of moves Thursday afternoon, and Farquhar will return from Tacoma for the first time in nearly a month. In 22 appearances for Seattle on the year, Farquhar has struggled, posting a 6.49 ERA across 26.1 innings.

Farquhar was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. Farquhar was recalled Saturday, and pitched both Saturday in Sunday. While his outing Saturday (2 innings, two walks and two strikeouts) went pretty well, he lasted just 0.2 innings Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits. He will return to Triple-A Tacoma, while the club is expected to make a corresponding move Monday.

He has dismal numbers at Triple-A and the majors this season, but the Mariners will add him to the bullpen mix nonetheless. At one point Farquhar was considered the next guy in line if Fernando Rodney lost his job as the closer, but Carson Smith is now the guy to own in the Mariners' bullpen.

Farquhar will receive the start for Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. With the Mariners already down two rotation members in James Paxton (finger) and Hisashi Iwakuma (shoulder) for at least the next few weeks, it looks like the team will attempt to stretch out Farquhar and see if he can cut it as a starter. Though he submitted a stellar season last season out of Seattle's bullpen, Farquhar was banished to the minors after posting a 6.46 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 23.2 innings thus far in 2015, but he'll get a chance to restore some value if he can prove to be an effective starter at Tacoma. The 28-year-old has not started a game at any point as a professional, so it's difficult to project what kind of results he may be capable of delivering.

Farquhar was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma following Monday's game. This move means that Carson Smith has unofficially become Fernando Rodney's handcuff. The 28-year-old Farquhar didn't pitch Monday, but has been knocked around for seven runs in his last three appearances, prompting the Mariners to make the move. Farquhar was aces out of the Seattle bullpen last year, but has seen his strikeout rate fall dramatically this season. On the bright side, the peripherals suggest he's seen a little bad luck, and he could make his way back to the Mariners if he can turn things around in the minors. Seattle is expected to activate Austin Jackson in a corresponding move.

Farquhar was knocked around for the second night in a row Tuesday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks with in one inning against the Astros. Farquhar allowed two runs Monday to break a 5-5 tie. Tuesday he came in with two on and gave up a walk, single and bases-clearing double to blow a 3-2 lead. Farquhar's been inconsistent thus far. He's only had two clean outings in eight appearances.

Farquhar had a rocky season debut Monday, giving up two hits in a third of an inning in an Opening Day win against the Angels. After lefty Charlie Furbush got an out, right-hander Carson Smith struck out Mike Trout to end the eighth-inning threat. Farquhar started slowly last year too, so he'll probably be all right (and, of course, this is only one game). However, it's worth keeping an eye on how Farquhar and the power-arm Smith are used. Farquhar is the closer-in-waiting to Fernando Rodney, but it's not out of the question that he could be jumped by Smith if his struggles last.

Farquhar has not allowed a run in his last four spring outings after giving up three in his first two. Farquhar is usually a slow starter in spring training, and this year was no different. He's struck out five and walked two in 5.2 innings. Farquhar, who had 16 saves in 2013, likely will close if Fernando Rodney goes down.

Farquhar would most likely be called upon in a save situation Monday, with Fernando Rodney unavailable, 710 ESPN's Shannon Drayer reports. Rodney has pitched in three straight games, and is therefore unavailable Monday. Farquhar will return to his setup role Tuesday.
