Descalso has seen fewer opportunities of late with the Diamondbacks having faced a string of left-handed starters, but he'll curiously find himself on the bench Sunday with righty German Marquez toeing the rubber for the Rockies. Perhaps Arizona manager Torey Lovullo just wanted to reward Brandon Drury with another turn at the keystone with Drury hitting 5-for-14 with three RBI over the past four contests. Descalso, meanwhile, has been cold at the dish since the beginning of August, contributing a .237/.301/.382 batting line.

Descalso contributed a pinch-hit, three-run home run in Friday's 9-5 win over the Rockies.

Descalso ceded the start at second base to Brandon Drury in the series opener, but still managed to torment his former team off the bench, as the home run was his second of the season against the Rockies. The infielder is now up to nine long balls on the season, which represents a new career high. He'll likely continue to see the bulk of the action at the keystone in September as the left-handed hitter in the platoon with Drury.

Since he's the favored option in the second-base platoon with Brandon Drury, Descalso should have plenty of opportunities over the final month of the season to establish a new career-high home-run total, after he previously hit eight as a member of the Rockies in 2016.

Descalso will retreat back to the bench for the third time in the past five games as Brandon Drury logs another start at the keystone in his place. Although Descalso was able to pick up two base knocks during Monday's game, he's only batting .197/.258/.279 this month, and is likely to continue losing starts if he doesn't break out of his slump soon.

Descalso is a meat-and-potatoes middle infielder with a significantly low fantasy ceiling. He's sporting a .240/.340/.399 slash line for the campaign and probably doesn't warrant a roster spot outside of the deepest settings. However, he has been playing consistently, and there is value in volume in cavernous leagues. Being attached to a strong lineup doesn't hurt, either.
