Clayton Richard (illness) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Tucson on Thursday. Richard has been out since early this month with an intestinal virus that caused him to lose 12 pounds. He should need just the one rehab start before rejoining the Padres' rotation.

Clayton Richard (illness) threw a simulated game Saturday at Tropicana Field. Richard was placed on the disabled list Sunday with an intestinal virus and reportedly lost 12 pounds since the issue surfaced. He'll need to continue to build up strength before he's ready to return. Even when healthy, Richard won't be guaranteed a spot in the Padres' rotation.

Padres placed LHP Clayton Richard on the 15-day disabled list with an intestinal issue. Richard has lost 12 pounds since the intestinal issue surfaced. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined. Tyson Ross has been activated from the disabled list and will assume Richard's spot on the roster.

Clayton Richard dropped to 0-4 after giving up seven runs -- five earned -- in 3 2/3 innings Saturday against the Diamondbacks. This has to be the end for Richard in the rotation, at least for a little while. Given his $5.24 million salary, there's little doubt he'd clear waivers if the Padres wanted to send him down. He has an 8.54 ERA, a 2.05 WHIP and fewer strikeouts (13) than walks (17) in six starts this season. Robbie Erlin could get a chance to replace him.

Clayton Richard surrendered five runs in 5 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Cubs. Not only does Richard have a 7.94 ERA after five starts, but he has more walks (13) than strikeouts (11) through 22 2/3 innings. The Padres tend to be pretty patient with their veterans, but he really needs to be better next time out in order to keep his spot.

Clayton Richard was pulled after allowing six runs in 1 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Brewers. Gary Darling had a miserable night behind the plate, so perhaps it's not fair to judge Richard based on this one. The left-hander has also been dealing with flu-like symptoms. Still, he has a 9/11 K/BB ratio and a 7.94 ERA after four starts, neither of which is encouraging at all.

Clayton Richard was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Giants due to the flu. Andrew Cashner will take the mound in his place and will probably be allowed to go three or four innings. Richard should be fine for his next turn in the rotation.

Clayton Richard labored through five innings but escaped with a no-decision Tuesday, giving up two runs on eight hits and three walks in the 9-3 win. Richard is usually a good spot start at home, especially against a struggling Dodgers' offense, but he didn't have it in this one. The left-hander now holds an ugly 8.68 ERA and 2.14 WHIP through his first two outings. He'll try to bounce back this weekend against the Rockies in another home start.

Clayton Richard allowed seven runs -- four earned -- in 4 1/3 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Mets. Richard allowed a league-high 31 home runs last season, and it was his downfall again Wednesday as he allowed big flies to Lucas Duda, John Buck and Ike Davis. The majority of the 29-year-old southpaw's success is a product of his home park. He's not an option outside of deep NL-only leagues.
