FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Tigers inquired about Chris Owings, "but talks did not progress very far." It's no surprise, of course, given that Owings is looking like the favorite to start at shortstop for the Diamondbacks. The Tigers at this point plan to use internal options to fill in for Jose Iglesias (shins) at shortstop, but it's obvious that they're also keeping their finger on the pulse of the trade market.

Jim Bowden of ESPN reports that Chris Owings is currently the favorite to start at shortstop for the Diamondbacks. He's competing with Didi Gregorius for the position, and by slashing .273/.319/.364 with a pair of RBI to this point he seems to have secured the position. He offers a nice package of power and speed, and should see his draft stock increase significantly with this recent news.

Chris Owings has taken some reps at second base during early spring training drills. Owings is competing with Didi Gregorius for the starting shortstop job, but him getting reps at another position suggests that he might make the roster as a backup even if he loses the competition. Owings appeared in three games at second last season and in 11 games there in the minors. "We've got those guys popping back and forth a little bit," manager Kirk Gibson said. "We're pretty flexible with what we can do with guys. We're very talented and deep with the guys we have in the infield for sure."

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal writes that the Mets would like to trade for a young shortstop. Rosenthal names the Diamondbacks' Chris Owings and Didi Gregorius and the Marlins' Brad Miller and Nick Franklin (who is admittedly more of a second baseman) among the possible targets. The Mariners are said to be "preoccupied" with talks to acquire David Price from the Rays, with Miller and Franklin likely to be involved, so a possible match with the Mets might be on the backburner. However, it's clear that the Mets are looking at alternatives to giving Stephen Drew a big contract.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers expects Chris Owings and Didi Gregorius to battle it out for the team's starting shortstop job in spring training. The 22-year-old Owings had a monster offensive season at Triple-A Reno, slashing .330/.359/.482 with 104 runs, 12 homers, 81 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 125 games. He then held his own by hitting .291/.361/.382 during a brief 55 at-bat audition with the D'Backs in September. He possesses far more offensive potential than Gregorius and would represent a nice option at middle infield should he win the job outright.

Chris Owings went 2-for-4 with a double in Saturday's loss to the Nationals. On an evening where the D'Backs hitters were thoroughly dominated by Dan Haren and the Nationals bullpen, Owings was the only hitter to record a multi-hit effort. After an extremely impressive season at Triple-A, Owings hasn't let up during his brief audition with the big club, slashing .291/.361/.382 with five runs, five RBI and a pair of steals in his first 55 at-bats.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson indicated Friday that Chris Owings would see work at second base over the final eight games of the regular season. The Diamondbacks are using it as an opportunity to gauge his versatility. The 22-year-old infielder is hitting .241/.371/.241 with two RBI, two steals and a 6/6 K/BB rate through his first 29 at-bats.

Chris Owings has started at shortstop in three consecutive games for Arizona. He collected two hits on Saturday, and did so again on Sunday. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson continues to express an interest in evaluating Owings for the 2014 season. Arizona is suddenly confronted with a stacked depth chart at shortstop. In addition to Owings, who was named Rookie of the Year of the Pacific Coast League after hitting .330 with 12 home runs, 81 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 125 games, the Snakes employ Didi Gregorius, Cliff Pennington and prospect Nick Ahmed. Expect the aggressive Diamondbacks to thin the ranks with at least one trade over the winter.

Chris Owings will make his first MLB start on Friday, starting at shortstop and hitting seventh against the Giants. The 22-year-old has gone 0-for-2 as a pinch-hitter since joining the team on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see how he fares at the big league level after terrorizing the Pacific Coast League to the tune of .330/.359/.482 with 12 homers, 81 RBI and 20 stolen bases en route to winning their Rookie of the Year honors. With a solid September, he can position himself to earn a regular role with the D'Backs in 2014.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said rookie shortstop Chris Owings will receive playing time in September. "You want to find out what he can do for sure," Gibson said. It's a frustratingly cryptic quote for fantasy owners, but NL-only owners should have already deciphered the obvious: If Owings draws any at-bats, he's well worth a roster spot. The 22-year-old was named Rookie of the Year of the Pacific Coast League after hitting .330 with an .841 OPS, 12 home runs, 81 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 125 games. Any playing time Owings receives is terrible news for starter Didi Gregorius, who is probably already looking in the rear-view mirror. This is a situation likely remedied by an offseason trade.
