Coghlan signed a one-year, $2.505 million contract with the Cubs on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports. The former National League Rookie of the Year revived a stalling career in 2014, batting an impressive .283/.352/.452 while collecting nine homers and seven steals. He's slated to serve as the Cubs' starting left fielder during the upcoming campaign, with a spot near the top of the order possibly awaiting him.

Coghlan is out of the lineup Friday against the Dodgers. Coghlan has started 10 of the Cubs' past 11 games in left field, but will take a seat Friday with southpaw Clayton Kershaw on the hill for the opposing Dodgers. Coghlan is slugging 81 points lower against left-handed pitching this season, so manager Rick Renteria likely wanted to get another right-handed bat in his lineup with the tough lefty on the mound. As a result, Junior Lake will take over in left field.

Coghlan is not in the lineup Saturday against the Pirates. Manager Rick Renteria has all but rid his lineup of lefty-only bats to counter Pirates starter Jeff Locke, with the lone exception being Luis Valbuena at third base. Coghlan has posted a .708 OPS so far in the second half but should continue leading off most days for the Cubs. Those duties will fall to Arismendy Alcantara on Saturday.

Coghlan is out of the lineup for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader. Coghlan got the start in Game 1, but will give way to Matt Szczur in left field, while Arismendy Alcantara leads off. Coghlan missed time earlier this week with toe soreness, so manager Rick Renteria likely doesn't want to push him too hard by having him start both games of a doubleheader. He may be available off the bench to pinch hit, if needed.

Coghlan is leading off and playing left field Tuesday versus San Francisco starter Ryan Vogelsong.
