McCann was expected to receive a few days off after an MRI revealed the issue Wednesday, but he could be close to a return, as he was able to pinch-hit Wednesday. “He told me he was OK to hit. I wasn’t going to catch him in that situation,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi told the New York Daily News. “But he told me he could hit and he’d had some success against [Boston closer Koji] Uehara. Didi (Gregorius) has never seen him, so I went with the guy who’d seen him before and understood what he’d try to do with him.” John Ryan Murphy, who had two hits in three at-bats Wednesday, will get his second consecutive start in McCann's absence.
