Abreu is in Sunday's starting lineup, but will be pulled in-game to receive recognition, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports. Abreu announced his retirement from baseball on Friday, and manager Terry Collins will award him one last start to cap off an 18-year career. Although he's listed on the lineup card, he's unlikely to receive a full day's work, so those in daily leagues may want to take note.

Abreu is expected to announce his retirement Friday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. Abreu's career has lasted longer than most, spanning from 1996 to its probable end in 2014. He was a two-time All Star with the Phillies in 2004 and 2005, won the Silver Slugger Award in 2004 and the Gold Glove Award in 2005 as well as the Home Run Derby. The 40-year-old outfielder owns a career regular season .291/.395/.475 batting line and participated in four postseasons, playing in 20 games.

The Mets will purchase Abreu's contract prior to Tuesday's game against the Rockies, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports. Per MLB rules, teams can't bring a player back onto their major league roster until a full 30 days have lapsed since their release, so Abreu will have to wait one more day before rejoining the Mets. Since the 40-year-old Abreu wouldn't seem to have a future with the Mets beyond the final month of the season, don't expect him to see much more than the occasional spot start or pinch-hitting opportunity.

Abreu will join the Mets' 40 man roster for their upcoming homestand, the team's official site reports. The 40 year old is batting .238 in the majors this season on just 122 attempts. It appeared that Abreu's career may have been over after he was released earlier this season, however he will get another chance to prolong his long career.

Abreu re-signed with the Mets on a minor league contract Thursday. He was assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas. Released by the Mets on Sunday, Abreu scanned the market for a few days and received little interest from clubs on a major league contract, prompting him to rejoin the organization. The 40-year-old will have the opportunity to keep his career going, but his lack of a 40-man roster spot may preclude him from earning a promotion to the Mets again this season.

The Mets released Abreu on Sunday, ESPN.com reports. The Mets could not find a team to take Abreu via a trade, so they decided to remove him from the roster Sunday. Abreu plans to continue playing, but it remains to be seen if the 40-year-old will find another major-league job.

Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bartolo Colon took charge on the mound while Abreu did the heavy lifting for the offense. What youth movement? Abreu had RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings and managed his first four-hit game since May 30, 2011. The 40-year-old has proven to be an excellent addition for New York, batting .319/.386/.472 across 39 games.

Bobby Abreu went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored in Friday's exrtra-inning loss to the Phillies. The stolen base was the 400th of his career. Abreu is now just one of four players in major league history to reach 200 home runs, 1,200 walks, and 400 stolen bases, joining Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson, and Joe Morgan. Pretty impressive company. The 40-year-old has been a nice find for the Mets so far, putting up a .304/.389/.478 batting line through 55 plate appearances.

Bobby Abreu, getting another rare start, went 1-for-2 with two walks in Friday's loss to the Nationals. Manager Terry Collins overlooked Abreu's defensive shortcomings, trying to infuse some on-base skills into the lineup. Through Abreu reached base three times, the Mets could never get him home. Whether in the starting lineup or coming off of the bench, Abreu has met expectations thus far, slashing .240/.333/.440 in 30 plate appearances.
