Bobby Abreu told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com that he would rather be traded than accept a bench role.
"I'm an everyday player, I can still be in the lineup of a major league team," said Abreu. "I will not be on the bench knowing I can play." Abreu's role will largely depend on the health of Kendrys Morales (ankle) and Mark Trumbo (foot), but with a crowded outfield, he looks like the odd man out right now. The Angels nearly found a match with the Yankees, but A.J. Burnett nixed the deal by using his no-trade clause. Abreu, who turns 38 next month, is owed $9 million this season.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Bobby Abreu "has been offered around" in trade talks.
The Angels have insisted publicly that they have no plans to trade the veteran, but they have a logjam in the outfield and at DH and surely wouldn't mind getting Abreu's $9 million salary off the books. They reportedly would have been willing to offer him to the Yankees in an A.J. Burnett deal, but Burnett could veto any trade to a West Coast team. Abreu batted just .253/.353/.365 with eight homers and 60 RBI in 2011.

Angels general manager Jerry DiPoto told Bobby Abreu during a phone call Sunday night that he will be given every opportunity this spring to win regular playing time.
"Bobby is an Angel," said DiPoto. "Right now, he fits on our 25-man roster, in our clubhouse, on our team. Where he is in eight weeks is predicated on how he's playing and everyone's health. We have some unknowns with the health of Kendrys and the progress of Mark, but we know Bobby is healthy. As I told him, if he swings the bat like he can, we're going to find a way to play him." Abreu, 37, has not requested a trade, but many suspect he would welcome a change of scenery. Of course, his $9 million salary for 2012 complicates matters.

A source told ESPN's Jayson Stark that the Angels would trade Bobby Abreu for a "middling prospect."
There isn't going to be much playing time available to Abreu in Anaheim this year, especially with Kendrys Morales looking healthy in his early workouts. Which is why the Halos are prepared to move the 37-year-old outfielder and DH in a straight salary dump. Abreu is owed $9 million in 2012. He'll be a free agent in the fall.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com was told that Bobby Abreu would welcome a trade out of Anaheim.
The Angels recently signed Albert Pujols, creating a logjam among their potential options at first base, DH and the outfield. However, Rosenthal suspects they'll want to get a read on the recovery of Kendrys Morales before exploring a deal. Abreu, who turns 38 in January, is set to earn $9 million next season before hitting free agency. His production has slipped over the past two seasons and he's no longer a viable outfielder, so the Angels would likely have to absorb some of his salary to complete a deal. While Abreu would welcome a change of scenery, Rosenthal hears that he is not the type to demand a trade.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times writes that Bobby Abreu will "probably" be the odd man out with the Angels' logjam at the first base/designated hitter positions.
The Angels have Albert Pujols, Kendry Morales, Mike Trumbo and Abreu available for first base and/or DH duty, so someone will have to go. The Angels are at least publicly saying they think Trumbo can handle third base or the outfield, though we have our doubts. DiGiovanna concedes that the Halos would "probably have to absorb" some of Abreu's $9 million salary for 2012 in order to deal him. The 37-year-old batted just .253/.353/.365 with eight homers and 60 RBI in 2011.

Bobby Abreu hit his first homer in 60 at-bats during Sunday's win over the Twins.
Abreu's last homer was the two-run shot off Mariano Rivera back on Aug. 9 in New York. In 140 at-bats since the All-Star break, he's hitting .200 with four homers and 17 RBI. Abreu will be 38 in March and is nearing the end of the line.

Bobby Abreu went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBI in the Angels' 6-4 win over the Yankees on Tuesday.
His two-run ninth-inning homer off Mariano Rivera was the death blow to New York. It's been a rather tough go of it for Abreu this season and his power surge comes out of nowhere. He had gone hitless in six of his previous eight games, striking out at least once in each of those contests. The home runs represent a third of his total output this year, as he now has six total. The 37-year-old's career-high ground ball rate has sapped him of his power, though he does have 15 steals. He's hitting .255 with a .726 OPS. Luckily for him, Abreu's $9 million option for 2012 has already vested.

Bobby Abreu's 2012 option for $9 million has vested.
Abreu needed 1,100 plate appearances between 2010-2011 for the option to kick in. After coming to the plate 667 times in 2010, Abreu logged his 433rd trip on Sunday afternoon. While he's hit a reasonable .264/.380/.354 this year, he has just 4 HR (down from 20 in 2010) and can't play the field. He'll be an overpaid DH in 2012.

Bobby Abreu went 2-for-5 with two RBI in a win over the Athletics in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Abreu bookended the victory with RBI singles in the first and ninth innings. This was his first multi-hit game since June 27. The 37-year-old continues to get on base with the best of them (.392 OBP) and has 13 stolen bases in 17 attempts, but a career-high ground ball rate has led to just three home runs.
