Alex Avila (jaw) is not in the Tigers' lineup Tuesday.
Avila experienced headaches during batting practice Monday and is sitting out a second straight game. Though the Tigers don't think he has a concussion, it's possible he'll need a few more days before returning. Gerald Laird is catching for Max Scherzer Tuesday.

Alex Avila (jaw) experienced headaches during batting practice Monday.
Avila was knocked unconscious Sunday when he took an elbow to the jaw from teammate Prince Fielder while chasing after a foul pop-up. He passed a concussion test and took batting practice Monday, but was not spotted in the clubhouse after the game. The Tigers could hold him out for another day or two just to be on the safe side.

Alex Avila left Sunday's game after being inadvertently elbowed by Prince Fielder while the two were chasing a pop-up.
Prince's elbow appeared to catch the cheek of Avila, who immediately dropped to the ground. He'll surely be checked for a concussion. Gerald Laird took Avila's spot behind the plate.

Alex Avila homered and doubled Thursday against the Yankees.
The homer was Avila's first since July 19 and just his second since May 22. His average has come up lately, so maybe the power will start to as well.

Alex Avila has discovered a daily treatment that alleviates some of the discomfort in his left knee.
The program requires an hour and 15 minutes of work each day, but it's paying huge dividends. He went 7-for-20 in the Tigers' last two series and continues to feel better. "Finding this is like a weight lifted off my shoulders," Avila said Sunday. "I couldn't hit the way I normally hit, and I was thinking, 'How can I change?' To be honest, I really didn't know how I could change."
