All four hits were singles, but it was an encouraging sign nevertheless as Hicks entered the contest with a .162 average in 18 games since returning from the DL. Even with his struggles, the 27-year-old has carved out a regular role in the crowded Yankees outfield so he'll get a chance to hit his way out of the slump heading into the stretch run of the season.

He'd scuffled through a six-game slump (2-for-23 with seven strikeouts) since his last homer, so it's nice to see an outburst like this from Hicks. It's worth keeping in mind that the young outfielder sported a .314/.423/.571 batting line with 10 homers and seven steals through his first 53 games before Achilles and oblique issues derailed his summer; he's the Yankees' unquestioned starter in center field, and another hot stretch to close out the season wouldn't be surprising.

Hicks crushed his 11th homer of the season to pull the Yankees within one run in the eighth inning of a divisional victory. After missing over a month with an oblique injury, it didn't take him long to find his power stroke, and he continues to be an excellent fantasy option with a .286/.390/.519 slash line.

Hicks was believed to be ready for Friday but beat that timeline. The club created the roster spot by deactivating Clint Frazier, who's battling an oblique strain of his own. Hicks, meanwhile, will slide right into essentially everyday playing time, and he looks ready to go after homering from Double-A Trenton on Wednesday. He was in the midst of a breakout year, compiling a .290/.398/.515 line with 10 home runs, 37 RBI, 40 runs and seven stolen bases over 242 plate appearances.

It sounds like the Yankees expect Hicks to need roughly a week with the top minor-league affiliate -- manager Joe Girardi said Hicks could be back by the end of the next road trip (which concludes Aug. 10). Hicks turned in a 2.7 fWAR in 60 games before going down, so his playing time should be secure once he returns. That playing time could come at the expense of Clint Frazier, although the team may opt to rotate its outfielders at DH with Matt Holliday struggling.
