Kassian was brought in to be an agitator but also as someone who could spark the Oilers. That plan didn't come to fruition. His 114 PIM proved more bad than good and he will have to prove to the Oilers in training camp that he deserves a spot on the team next season.

Kassian's boarding penalty Thursday against the Sharks led to a game misconduct and 24 total penalty minutes.

A first-round pick in 2009, Kassian's never developed the offensive touch to go with that billing, but he's now cleared 100 PIM in only 31 games for Edmonton this year. That physicality is the main source of his fantasy value.

While he doesn't add in tons of offense, the 25-year-old does have some value if you need someone to rack up the hits and PIM.

As expected, Kassian will play Saturday against the Avalanche.

Kassian's best asset is likely his hitting ability, as the big-bodied forward has racked up 42 hits in just 13 games with the Oilers this season. He likely won't be in many fantasy lineups, however, as he can't be relied on as a consistent source of offensive production, having tallied just 20 points in 55 games over the past two seasons. The former first-round pick will likely slot back into the lineup as a bottom-six forward Saturday against Colorado.

Kassian (illness) won't play Thursday against the Wild, but is expected to return to action Saturday against Colorado.

Expect an update on Kassian's status ahead of puck drop Saturday evening.

With four points in eight games, Kassian's career in Edmonton is off to a promising start after his career with the Canadiens ended almost before it began. As expected, he's also provided a physical boost to the lineup, having racked up 18 PIM and 30 hits as an Oiler thus far. As long as Kassian continues to see nearly 14 minutes of ice time per game, he'll at least be able to rack up those tough-guy stats while chipping in the occasional point.

Kassian was recalled by the Oilers on Monday.

EDGE Analysis

Sent down just before the All-Star break, Kassian got some extra ice time with the AHL affiliate before now rejoining the club. The former first-round pick has two points in six games with the Oilers, and will look to add to that total when he draws into the lineup. However, he may not be a consistent presence among the 12 forwards, limiting Kassian's value on the whole.

Kassian was assigned to AHL Bakersfield on Sunday.

This isn't really a demotion for Kassian, as the Oilers are just trying to give him more playing time in the minors during the All Star break. He's a lock to get called back up when play resumes for Edmonton.
