Weiss is expected to return to the Red Wings after playing one game with AHL Grand Rapids next weekend as part of a conditioning stint, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. Weiss was hoping to play Friday night for the Red Wings against the Blackhawks, but he will be out at least another week. He will miss at least five more games, and is now on track to return the Red Wings either Nov. 24 or Nov. 26.

Weiss (groin) hopes to be available for the Red Wings in their Nov. 14 game against the Blackhawks, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports. Weiss indicated that he felt good after skating for the second straight day Saturday, creating optimism that he might not be far off of a return. If he's able to practice again Sunday or Monday, the Red Wings could send him off on a conditioning assignment at AHL Grand Rapids in preparation for his return to the lineup next weekend.

Weiss (groin) skated on his own prior to Friday's morning session, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports. Weiss had been limited to off-ice activity since injuring his groin nine days earlier, so the fact that he's resumed skating suggests he's starting to notice some improvement. After he takes part in a few practices with the team, the Red Wings are expected to send Weiss back to AHL Grand Rapids to finish off the conditioning assignment that was previously interrupted by the injury.

Weiss (groin) could resume practicing over the weekend, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports. Weiss was placed on injured reserve after aggravating his groin during a conditioning assignment at AHL Grand Rapids last week, but GM Ken Holland doesn't believe it's a long-term concern for the center. Though Weiss is still at least 10 days away from being ready to play, the Red Wings will be able to send him back to Grand Rapids for another game or two since the first stint was interrupted. There's optimism that Weiss will be back with the Red Wings by the end of the month, but unless the team suffers a rash of injuries, he'll have a tough time earning a regular spot in the lineup.

Weiss (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Friday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports. As was expected when the Red Wings pulled Weiss off his conditioning assignment Wednesday, he'll head to IR while the team assesses the extent of his groin injury. Johan Franzen is expected to be activated from IR prior to Sunday's game against the Sabres, taking Weiss' spot on the 23-man roster.

Weiss will not play in the third period of his conditioning assignment at AHL Grand Rapids after sustaining a lower body injury, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports. Weiss had been on a rehab assignment to keep him fresh for when needed by Detroit, but it seems as if his absence may last a bit longer than expected. Look for the team to update his status as soon as more information is known.

Weiss was sent to AHL Grand Rapids on a conditioning assignment, MLive.com's Brendan Savage reports. After appearing in just 26 games in his first season in Detroit due to a sports hernia, Weiss has been a healthy scratch in all but one the Wings' eight games this season. Since ice time has been hard to come by with the parent club, Weiss will simply head to Grand Rapids for games Wednesday and Friday as a means of staying fresh for when the Red Wings might ultimately need him. Weiss will rejoin the Red Wings in Buffalo for their game Sunday, and remain on the Red Wings' 23-man roster through the duration of his stay with Grand Rapids.

Weiss was able to play without any pain in Saturday's 1-0 overtime win against Toronto, the Detroit Free Press reports. Weiss only played for eight minutes and played at left wing, a new position for him, but looked comfortable out there. With Johan Franzen likely to return Tuesday, however, Weiss may be a healthy scratch again.

Weiss looks like he'll be a healthy scratch for Thursday's season opener against the Bruins, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports. Weiss didn't practice Wednesday on any of the top four lines or on any of the Wings' special teams units, a sign he'll be bound for the press box Thursday. The former 60-point scorer has appeared in just 43 games combined over the past two seasons, and though he's now healthy, the 31-year-old seems to be on the downside of his career. It may prove exceedingly difficult for Weiss to reemerge as the second-line center the Wings were counting on him to be when they signed him to a five-year contract in 2013.

Weiss indicated he's feeling healthy following his April 21 surgery to repair his sports hernia, NHL.com's Dan Rosen reports. Weiss was a disaster in his first season with the Red Wings after inking a five-year, $24.5 million deal last summer, appearing in only 26 games and totaling four points. He ultimately required a pair of sports hernia surgeries that prevented a second-half return, but after spending the last four months recovering, he appears ready to go for 2014-15. Weiss will be given the opportunity to win back his job as the Wings' No. 2 center, but it seems dubious that he'll be able to return to the 50-point form he showed during his prime years with the Panthers.
