Varlamov (undisclosed) will not be in action against Chicago on Tuesday but has been upgraded to day-to-day, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Varlamov appears to be close to making his season debut and could be an option as early as Thursday's meeting with Columbus. Once the 33-year-old netminder is given the all-clear, he should retake his spot as the No. 1 goaltender, though he figures to face a season-long challenge from Ilya Sorokin for minutes. Varlamov's return to the ice will require him to be activated off injured reserve while Cory Schneider will be dropped to the minors.

Varlamov (soreness) skated with the Islanders prior to their 6-3 loss to the Hurricanes on Thursday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Islanders and coach Barry Trotz have been very secretive about the exact nature of the injury to Varlamov. While skating would certainly seem to be a step in the right direction, Varlamov will need to participate in a full practice and take shots before playing between the pipes in an actual game. That would make playing Saturday versus the Panthers unlikely. Next Tuesday in Chicago might be a more realistic target for Varlamov to be activated off of injured reserve.

Varlamov (undisclosed) will make the trip to Carolina for Thursday's season opener versus the Hurricanes, but he's not expected to play, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Islanders will start the 2021-22 campaign with a massive 13-game road trip, so it's not surprising to see Varlamov making the trip to Carolina despite the fact he isn't expected to dress against the Hurricanes. Until Varlamov is given the green light, Ilya Sorokin will serve as the Isles' No. 1 netminder with Cory Schneider filling in as his backup.

Varlamov (undisclosed) was transferred to injured reserve on Monday, per PuckPedia.
EDGE Analysis
Varlamov just started skating again Monday so it's unlikely that he'll start Thursday's game against Carolina after missing the entire preseason. He shouldn't miss an extended period of time but Ilya Sorokin will handle most of the goaltending duties while he's gone. The 33-year-old posted an outstanding 2.04 GAA and .929 save percentage in 36 games last season.

Varlamov (undisclosed) has begun skating as he progresses to the next step of his recovery, Brian Compton of NHL.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Varlamov was poised to enter the 2021-22 campaign as the No. 1 option between the pipes before picking up his undisclosed injury. Given he has just started skating, Varlamov should be considered a long shot to play in the season opener against Carolina on Thursday, instead Ilya Sorokin figures to get the starting nod with Cory Schneider serving as the backup.

Varlamov (soreness) is not expected to play in either of the last two preseason games for the Islanders, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Varlamov is dealing with soreness that seems to be lingering more than the Islanders have expected. Not only won't he play during the preseason, but he also isn't likely to play during the Islanders' first couple of games to open the season. Ilya Sorokin will open the season as the starter for the Islanders, with Cory Schneider backing him up.

Varlamov (undisclosed) is dealing with a nagging injury according to coach Barry Trotz raising doubts regarding his availability for Opening Night against Carolina on Oct. 14, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Varlamov has missed the 20-win mark in each of the previous two seasons while sharing the net with youngster Ilya Sorokin. If the veteran Varlamov is out for an extended period of time to start the year, it could open the door for Varlamov to take on a more prominent role with the club and see a larger share of the goalie workload.

Varlamov is dealing with an undisclosed injury and has not yet started skating at training camp, Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
No injury had previously been reported with the 33-year-old, so this news certainly comes as a surprise. Varlamov is still likely to make at least half the starts for the Islanders this year, but Ilya Sorokin is the team's goalie of the future, so the two are likely to share crease time again in 2021-22. That said, fantasy managers interested in either netminder heading into draft day will want to keep tabs on the severity of Varlamov's issue as Opening Night approaches.

Varlamov stopped 30 of 31 shots in a 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay in Game 7 on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
A heartbreaking elimination loss for the veteran netminder, who allowed just a short-handed goal to Yanni Gourde from point-blank range less than two minutes into the second period. The Islanders struggled to generate offensive support for Varlamov all series long, totaling just 11 goals in seven games, including a pair of shutout losses. Varlamov went 7-7 during the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 2.68 GAA and .919 save percentage in 13 starts.

Varlamov will protect the road goal in Friday's Game 7 versus the Lightning, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Outside of ugly outings in Games 2 and 5, Varlamov has been fairly reliable in the Stanley Cup Semifinals. The 33-year-old Russian will look to upset the defending Cup champions Friday with a trip to the Cup Finals on the line.
