Sundqvist was recalled from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

With the Penguins locked into their playoff position, it appears the club may give some of its regulars a day of rest Sunday in favor of some younger bodies. Sundqvist could enter the lineup as a result, but he's failed to notch a point despite playing in nine contests with Pittsburgh earlier this season.

Sundqvist served as a much needed replacement for the banged up Pens' but considering he averaged just 8:24 of ice time and failed to secure a point, it shouldn't be surprising to see the youngster heading back to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. With Jake Guentzel (concussion) nearing a return, Sundqvist's services were no longer need in Pittsburgh.

The youngster did manage to dish out seven hits and six shots on goal, but certainly not the level of production that would earn him a place on the 23-man roster. With Tom Sestito (suspension) eligible to return and Patric Hornqvist (concussion) improving, the Pens needed to return some bodies back to the AHL and Sundqvist was the odd man out.

The brutish pivot has made a splash in the minors this season; his 39 points (16 goals, 23 assists) coincide with a plus-11 rating in 53 games and he's amassed 44 PIM to boot. Patric Hornqvist is being evaluated for a possible concussion, necessitating the call-up of the 22-year-old Sundqvist.

Sundqvist has scored five goals (and four assists) in 12 games for the Baby Penguins after scoring five times in 45 games as a rookie last year.

In addition to his time in the AHL, Sundqvist skated in 18 games for Pittsburgh in 2015-16, scoring four points (1G, 3A). The forward plays a physical game and will be on the short list for a recall when injuries strike the big club.

Sundqvist scored his first career NHL goal Saturday -- a short-handed effort -- against the Islanders.

Given Sundqvist's frequent presence on the recalled/reassigned list, he has logged significantly more minutes on the road between Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre than on the ice. The 22-year-old was brought up in the event Nick Bonino was unavailable, but ended up being a healthy scratch. The center will likely remain in the AHL for the remainder of the season, barring any further injuries on the Penguins' roster.

Well that was a quick turnaround for Sundqvist who was reassigned to the AHL earlier on Friday. Nick Bonino was hit in the hand by a puck during practice which resulted in the team pulling a quick 180 on Sundqvist's trip to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. It's unclear if the 22-year-old will get any game action, but clearly the injury to Bonino was bad enough to warrant an emergency recall.
