Sundqvist didn't get the chance to suit up for a minor-league game before getting recalled, so it's interesting to see him assigned for less than 48 hours. The 23-year-old pivot was a healthy scratch in 12 of 13 games before his assignment, so if he doesn't suit up Saturday against the Sabres it will be to nobody's surprise.

The Blues assigned Sundqvist to AHL San Antonio on Wednesday, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.

Sundqvist scored 46 points in the AHL last season, but his chances of contributing those numbers to the NHL's best team appear bleak at the moment.

Sundqvist has found the scoresheet twice in his last four contests, after being held pointless his first six games of the season.

After proving himself in the minors last season recording 46 points in 63 games, Sundqvist has been given the opportunity to try and earn a consistent NHL role with injuries hurting the forward core. Sundqvist has been skating on the third line regularly and logging an average of 11:29 on ice to begin the season, and flashing a strong two-way game notching 13 hits and three blocked shots in 10 games this season. The 23-year-old has clear NHL potential, and will look to build upon his strong start to the season Monday against Los Angeles.

Sundqvist signed a one-year, $650,000 contract with the Blues on Saturday, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Sundqvist was acquired via draft-day trade, then his rights were retained by the Blues on Tuesday and now he's latched on for one year. He was held without a point in 10 games for Pittsburgh this season, but for the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, he amassed 46 points in 63 games and a plus-12 rating. His role in St. Louis increased in importance when it was released that center Patrik Berglund (shoulder) will sit out until December.

Sundqvist was extended a qualifying offer by the Blues, Fox Sports Midwest reports.

After being picked up in a draft-day trade, St. Louis is making sure they keep the 23-year-old center around. Sundqvist hasn't proven yet that he's a NHL-ready center yet, but a solid summer with the Blues could change some minds. He scored 20 goals and 46 points in 66 games for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season, so it's obvious that his long-term potential is something general manager Doug Armstrong wants to hold onto.

Sundqvist was traded to the Blues Friday night, Frank Seravalli of TSN reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Blues certainly had far more interesting in moving up to pick #31 in the first-round than they did in acquiring Sundqvist. The 23-year-old came over from Sweden two seasons ago as a quality prospect but he has struggled to make an impact at the NHL level. Sundqvist will be nothing more than a depth option for the Blues next year.

EDGE Analysis

Although Sundqvist failed to register a point this season, the fact that coach Mike Sullivan utilized him in 10 contests this year -- more than the four other players reassigned Monday -- should bode well for his chances to crack the lineup heading into the 2017-18 campaign. The 23-year-old is currently third on the Baby Pens in goals (20) and fifth in assists (25), so look for him to continue to be a factor as they kick off the Calder Cup Playoffs.
