Lieuwen has retired from professional hockey due to ongoing issues with a concussion, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lieuwen sustained a severe concussion on April 6, 2014 when he was hit in the head by Philadelphia's Jay Rosehill as he was coming across the goal crease. Lieuwen experienced some of the common symptoms of a concussion, but he suffered from a more uncommon one as well -- his vision was completely thrown off and since then, he has never been able to track the puck as easily as he could before the incident. It's an unfortunate story, especially considering the goalie is just 25-years-old, but the silver lining is that Lieuwen says he plans to stay involved with hockey, perhaps becoming a goalie coach sometime in the near future.

Lieuwen was called up Friday and will backup Chad Johnson against the Senators.
EDGE Analysis
AHL Rochester has been rotating three goalies all season and Lieuwen leads the team in appearances (26), wins (14) and goals-against average (2.86). The 24-year-old former sixth-round pick has seven NHL games under his belt but has yet to make an appearance for the Sabres this season despite getting called up in October when Robin Lehner (lower body) suffered a high-ankle sprain in the season opener. Head coach Dan Bylsma said Lieuwen will be with the team for the next two games, which means that he may see some game action.

The Sabres recalled Lieuwen from AHL Rochester on Saturday, Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Sabres placed primary goaltender Robin Lehner (lower body) on injured reserve Saturday, and brought up Lieuwen to add a second goaltender to the roster. Chad Johnson is slated to be the Sabres' top goaltender in Lehner's absence, and Lieuwen will slot in as his backup.

Lieuwen (concussion) signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Sabres on Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports. Lieuwen appeared in just 16 games last season with AHL Rochester due to concussion concerns, but the Sabres' decision to extend him a qualifying offer and the goalie's subsequent signing of that offer indicate that he should be ready to play for the start of the 2015-16 campaign. He's expected to serve in a depth role again at Rochester, where he went 4-9-0 with a 3.29 GAA and .883 save percentage until he was shut down due to the concussion.

Lieuwen announced Thursday that he would "take significant time off" to recover from a concussion sustained last season, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports. Lieuwen sustained the concussion during a stint with the Sabres in April. He had been playing regularly for Rochester all season until suffering a hip flexor injury, but had been experiencing vision issues throughout. After a neurologist determined Lieuwen's brain never fully healed from the April concussion, the 23-year-old will take some time off until further notice. It's likely the vision problems had some impact in his downturn in performance for Rochester, as he posted a 3.29 GAA and .883 save percentage across 16 games.

Lieuwen is dealing with a lower-body injury and will miss at least a week of action for AHL Rochester, Kevin Oklobzija of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reports. With Lieuwen out of commission, the AHL squad will turn to Andrey Makarov to man the net in the interim. Rochester will welcome back Matt Hackett (knee) from the injured list at some point in the near future as well, which could Lieuwen's standing with the team in some peril if he's unable to recover quickly from his injury.

Lieuwen was sent back to AHL Rochester on Sunday, Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald reports. Lieuwen was called up after Michael Neuvirth went on the disabled list so since Lieuwen is being sent back to Rochester it likely means Neuvirth is healthy again. In the AHL this season, the 23-year-old goalie has compiled a 3-4 record in 10 appearances.

Lieuwen was recalled from Rochester by Buffalo. This is brought on by Michael Neuvirth's lower body injury, who is day-to-day. Lieuwen has allowed 3.53 goals per game and gone 3-4-0 this season with Rochester in the AHL.

Lieuwen was assigned to AHL Rochester on Tuesday. Lieuwen saw some time with Buffalo late in the season when Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth succumbed to injuries, but with the Sabres' top two netminders both healthy in training camp, Lieuwen never had much hope of winning a job. Instead, he'll have to contend with prospect Andrey Marakov for regular action with Rochester.

Lieuwen will start and possibly play the whole game in their preseason opener Sunday against Washington. The Sabres are dressing their two AHL goalies with Lieuwen and Andrey Makarov. Lieuwen, a sixth-round pick, usurped the starting job from Matt Hackett in Rochester last year until a concussion shut Lieuwen down for the season, paving the way for Makarov to finish as Rochester's starter in the playoffs. Lieuwen finished his AHL season with a .922 save percentage and 17 wins in 32 appearances. Interesting to hear that head coach Ted Nolan will likely play Lieuwen the whole game, sending the message loud and clear that each goalie will get a fair shot and a fair look. It's open season in the organization right now as Lieuwen and Makarov vie for the starting job in Rochester while Michal Neuvirth and Jhonas Enroth battle for the big league gig.
