Marner was switched down to the fourth line earlier this week because of his struggles. He's hit a bit of sophomore slump and is minus-8 with just four points (one goal, three assists) on the season. Marner is too good to stay down for long, but he clearly needs to work on some parts of his game to get back in a groove.

The offence is great, but we raised a Spockian eyebrow to his minus-2 rating on Saturday night, especially when the Leafs won 8-5. Marner managed 61 points last season while primarily playing with -- and carrying -- Tyler Bozak and James Van Riemsdyk. Marner could deliver so much more with better linemates.

Marner wants a bigger role on the ice this season, particularly on the defensive side of the puck, reports the Toronto Sun.

"You want to be out there to get a game tied so you can win it in overtime," Marner said. "You want a bigger role, go out on every shift like it's your last." That means a bigger emphasis on the things like shot blocks, hits, takeaways and puck protection that mean coach Mike Babcock will send him over the boards in clutch situations. Fantasy owners need to watch this carefully, as the smallish Marner risks injury taking on defensive tasks like the ones described above.

Marner was added to Canada's roster for the IIHF World Championships, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.

Marner became available after the Maple Leafs fell to the Capitals in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The 19-year-old's last international experience came during the 2015-16 campaign when he recorded six points in five games during the World Junior Championships. Marner enjoyed a solid rookie campaign in which he managed 19 goals and 42 assists with a respectable 176 shots on goal, and it appears that the sky is the limit for he and the rest of this young Maple Leafs team going forward.

Marner, who has one goal and four points in five games this postseason, has found it harder to be a difference maker in the playoffs. Coach Mike Babcock says the winger "... (has) got to dig in," reports the Toronto Sun.

Marner's style -- creativity and patience with the puck -- makes it hard for him to navigate when the extra seconds available to make a play in the regular season are gone. Marner's ice time has dropped from close to 17 minutes a game in the regular season to less than 14 minutes in Game 4. And just 14:29 in Game 5. However, Babcock was confident Marner will find his game soon. "He'll be great (on Sunday). Everything about Mitchy, he's a big moment guy. He'll find it."

Marner recorded two assists during Wednesday's Game 4 loss to Washington.

EDGE Analysis

With a goal and three helpers through four playoff games, Marner continues to move the fantasy needle in his debut campaign. He's probably a risky option in daily contests going forward, but his long-term value is sky high. It isn't out of the question to pony up to secure his services for the long haul in keeper/dynasty settings.

Marner scored 1:35 into his playoff debut Thursday, an eventual 3-2 overtime loss to Washington.

When you're on the road in the playoffs, it's huge to get an early score and quiet the crowd to blunt the home team's momentum, but Marner's tally (and Jake Gardiner's subsequent goal) didn't slow down the Capitals. Marner sagged to the finish line in the regular season, recording just four points in the final nine games and no multi-point efforts in the last month-plus, but perhaps the four full days off before this series served to refresh him. The Leafs will certainly need more offense from him if they're to upend a clearly superior team in the Capitals.

Marner scored his 19th goal of the season - a power-play tally - in Tuesday's 4-1 loss against the Capitals.

EDGE Analysis

The Calder Trophy hopeful is up to 19 goals and 61 points this season. He and Auston Matthews have combined to rejuvenate the franchise and get them to the brink of the postseason. It might be the first of many playoff appearances for Marner, Matthews and company.

Marner scored on a breakaway Saturday in a 5-4 win over Detroit. It was his 18th of the season.

It was his 59th point of the season, but just his first goal in 10 games. Marner could soon be the second Maple Leaf rookie to crest the 60-point mark.

Marner set a new Maple Leafs franchise record for assists by a rookie when he tallied his 41st in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Predators.

Marner has been everything that was advertised when he was a junior player and then some. He's still growing into his body and will become better and better as he physically matures. Remarkably, the record Marner broke had been in place since 1943-44 when Gus Bodnar set the mark.
