Mike Smith won for the ninth straight time Thursday night -- even though he wasn't sharp -- as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Calgary Flames 4-3 in a shootout.
Playoff destiny seems to be on Phoenix's side. A month ago, many were wondering which assets they'd sell off. Now, they are 9-0-1 this month and seventh in the Western Conference, slowly moving up the standings. Smith hasn't been all that good his last two starts (seven goals altogether) -- he made only 21 saves Thursday -- but he continues to do enough to give the Yotes chances to get two points, and that's all that matters at this point.

Mike Smith won for the seventh straight game as the Phoenix Coyotes edged the Dallas Stars on Saturday night 2-1 in overtime.
The netminder made 30 saves, and his play of late has vaulted the low-scoring Coyotes into the heat of the playoff picture in the Western Conference. Phoenix has 67 points and is now seventh. Smith has been pretty much flawless in those seven games -- allowing a whopping seven goals. He's a top-tier No. 1 option in fantasy leagues right now -- and certainly a bargain one at that.

Mike Smith recorded his second consecutive shutout as the Phoenix Coyotes edged the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night 1-0.
Smith has been on fire lately, winning six straight while letting in a total of six goals in that span. Thursday, he made 28 stops. The Yotes are now tied for seventh spot in the Western Conference with 65 points. Game by game, it's becoming pretty evident that the Yotes will be buyers come the deadline. Smith has a 24-14-7 record with a 2.28 goals-against average and .927 save percentage.

Mike Smith will be in net for the Phoenix Coyotes Thursday.
Smith was given a rare night off Tuesday as the Coyotes played the Canucks but he will be right back at it Thursday when the Coyotes are in Los Angeles to take on the Kings. He was the first star of the week this past week in the NHL and now has a sparkling 2.33 GAA and a .925 save percentage this season.

Mike Smith earned the NHL's first star of the week.
Smith allowed just three goals over the course of four games last week. He's currently riding a five-game winning streak and is one of the biggest reasons the Coyotes are in the hunt for a playoff spot. Smith has a 2.33 GAA and .925 save percentage in 44 starts.

Mike Smith has already surpassed his previous career-high for games played.
After an up-and-down three-plus season stint with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Smith seems to have finally reached his potential as a member of the Phoenix Coyotes. He has a 2.33 GAA and .925 save percentage in 44 starts, which is comparable to what Ilya Bryzgalov did for them before he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers. Smith is signed through 2012-13 and comes with a very reasonable $2 million cap hit.

Mike Smith was brilliant versus the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night, making 38 saves in the 3-0 shutout.
With five consecutive wins and six goals allowed in those starts, Smith is one of the hottest goalies in the NHL right now. It was also his third shutout of the year. The Yotes' win streak has put them in the eighth seed, two points in front of the Colorado Avalanche. The longer they stay in the race, the more likely they become buyers (or at least stand pat) at the deadline, instead of dealing some veteran pieces. Smith has a 23-14-7 record, 2.33 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.

Mike Smith kicked away 23 shots Thursday night in the Phoenix Coyotes' 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames.
With a team that doesn't exactly light the world on fire on offense, the Yotes' playoff chances lie heavily on the play of Smith. It's no shock then that in their four-game winning streak, the netminder has allowed a total of six goals -- one in each of the past three games. Smith has a 2.39 goals-against average, .923 save percentage and a 22-14-7 record this season.
