And we don't know if he'll struggle after a deal like he did when he went to Ottawa last season. Duchene is a serious fantasy risk, unless you like high-stakes gambles.

Duchene is taking a wait-and-see approach on inking a new deal based on the actions of teammates Erik Karlsson and Mark Stone, NHL.com reports.

Given that Duchene thought he was escaping a massive rebuild in Colorado, it's understandable that he might not want to be around for the same thing in Ottawa, especially as he's entering what should be the prime of his career. Karlsson and Stone could leave via free agency after the 2018-19 season, or perhaps even earlier, and Duchene's approach makes it sound like the center will test the waters if Stone leaves or the Senators don't get a decent return for Karlsson.

Duchene's contract is entering its final year this season, but the 27-year-old center has yet to discuss extending it with the Senators. Although he is open to re-signing with the team, he did mention watching the Tavares sweepstakes over the summer. The Senators would surely love to lock down a player they traded so much for last November, but with the current state of the organization and Duchene mentioning that players have to do what is best for them, it is looking like he may test the free agent waters after the season is over.
