Ullmark gave it his best shot in what was his first start since Dec. 15, but when the league-leader in wins (Braden Holtby) is in the opposing net, wins are almost always tough to come by. With the loss, Ullmark is stuck at five wins in 15 appearances this year to go with lackluster counting stats (.912 save percentage, 2.60 GAA). Robin Lehner (ankle) is due back from a nearly season-long absence in a week or two, so either Ullmark or Chad Johnson will likely be headed to the minors then.

EDGE Analysis

It'll be Ullmark's first start since the holiday break, who gets the nod instead of Chad Johnson, who needed a furious third-period comeback to win 6-3 against the Bruins on Saturday. The Caps are the best team in the Eastern Conference, so it's advised for owners to sit Ullmark.

New Jersey only averages 25.7 shots per game -- last in the NHL -- and it stayed to true to that trend Tuesday night by giving Ullmark a light workload. The two goals against the Swede were excusable, as Lee Stempniak's tally happened on a rebound and Jiri Tlusty's lamp lighter in the third period was made possible by a turnover from the Sabres in their own zone.

Sabres coach Dan Bylsma said Ullmark will start between the posts Tuesday night against the Devils.

Ullmark defeated the Kings through overtime in his last start, but despite that performance, he still owns an ugly 3.19 GAA and .898 save percentage through three December starts. Still, the Sabres will roll out Ullmark to face a New Jersey team that has 34 points and are five spots ahead of Buffalo in the Eastern Conference standings.

Ullmark made 20 saves Saturday in a 2-1 overtime win over the Kings.

It was his first win since Nov. 12. Ullmark made three huge saves in overtime to give his team a chance; one of those was on a Anze Kopitar breakaway. Nice performance, but it's Chad Johnson's net. Ullmark hadn't started since Nov. 20 and had appeared just once in relief since then.

Ullmark continues to be a starting option in Buffalo goal since Robin Lehner, the team's top netminder to open the season, reportedly remains without a timetable for his return after sustaining a high-ankle sprain over nine weeks ago. Of course, Chad Johnson is also trying to hold down the fort for the 11-5-3 Sabres. We'd be hesitant to start Ullmark in daily formats since his team is currently in last place in the Atlantic Division, whereas the Kings (19-8-1) are tops in the Pacific.

It's been a struggle of late for Ullmark, as he dropped his sixth in a row and owns just an .859 save percentage his last three times out. Chad Johnson has been seeing more starts recently, and with Ullmark allowing nine goals combined in his past two outings, that trend will likely continue until Robin Lehner returns.

Ullmark turned away 42 shots Tuesday, but gave up four goals in regulation and one more in the shootout to take a 5-4 loss in Detroit.

The Sabres are not terribly responsible defensively or productive offensively, which has resulted in Ullmark going 0-3-2 in his last five starts despite the fact that he's posted save marks of .913 or better four times in that span. Chad Johnson had started twice in a row since relieving Ullmark last Friday, so it's good for the rookie's fantasy owners to see him get back out on the ice and play well despite that it was in a losing effort.
