Jacob Markstrom outperformed teammate Tyler Plante on Tuesday night and may have earned the team's backup goaltending job as a result. Markstrom made 10 saves on 10 shots in 31:02 of ice time, while Plante surrendered four goals on 16 shots, with two of them coming in his first 1:34 of work. "I felt good out there," said Markstrom. "I don't think of it [as an audition]. I just try to do play my best and see what happens." Stay tuned for updates.

Jacob Markstrom will start in goal Tuesday night for the Panthers against Dallas. With Scott Clemmensen shelved after he underwent what the team described as minor knee surgery, the Panthers need somebody to be Jose Theodore's backup. Markstrom and Tyler Plante are battling to win that job until Clemmensen returns, which could be six weeks away. Clemmensen's knee swelled over the weekend and he had an MRI on Sunday.

Jacob Markstrom was very unhappy about his performance on Friday. Markstrom played the whole game against Tampa Bay, saddled with a 5-2 loss. He is clearly a competitor and expects more out of himself. "I don't want to let goals in. That's why I'm in net," Markstrom said. "It's always fun to play against the big boys, but it's never fun to lose. I want to win. We didn't do that." As the goalie of the future for Florida, will start the season in the minors.

Jacob Markstrom has impressed the Florida Panthers with his play in two rookie games. He played in a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday night and a 3-1 loss to Nashville on Tuesday afternoon. Markstrom has looked good after ending last season with a knee injury "I think you can see a huge difference in him from last year," said goalie coach Robb Tallas. "You can see the confidence. And this from a guy who hasn't played a full game since [February]. I'm real happy with how he played. He tracked the puck well, the goals that beat him were good shots. He's made big saves. He wants to stop every single puck. He came into camp with a mind that he's showing everyone he's healthy. He's making a stand for himself." Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmensen are projected to serve as Florida's netminders when the season starts, but if one of them gets hurt or struggles out of the gate then Markstrom could see action as early as this campaign.

The Florida Panthers will be very interested in the progress of goaltender Jacob Markstrom this season. Markstrom is the Panthers' goalie of the future and while they had hoped he would be able be the starter in 2011-12, he injured his knee in the AHL in February that required season-ending surgery. Markstrom struggled early on last season, his first in North America, but came on near the end before the injury. Markstrom is one of the top goaltending prospects not in the NHL, but with the health of his knee in question, the Panthers went out and signed the veteran Jose Theodore to play between the pipes, giving Markstrom more time in the minors. Grab Markstrom in all keeper leagues as he will likely be the starter in 2012-13 and for many years after that.

Jacob Markstrom (knee surgery) thinks he'll be ready for the start of training camp. The Panthers already have Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmensen locked up, so Markstrom is expected to start the 2011-12 season in the minors. However, he'll probably get a chance to show what he can do at the NHL level if either of the Panthers' top two goaltenders sustain an injury.
