Frederik Andersen, the only goalie in NHL history from Denmark, was not expected to star for the Anaheim Ducks this season, or maybe ever.
Of the organization's top four goalies in training camp, Andersen was the least known and the least likely to stick. In the preseason, Andersen played half of one game and one period of another. Then he was sent to the minors. After Hiller, the Ducks already had invested in Viktor Fasth, with prospect John Gibson not a blip but more of a blimp on the radar. The Ducks had their present and their future. "We knew Andersen was good," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "But he was the one goalie no one was really talking about back then." When Fasth was injured, the Ducks promoted Andersen but only because Gibson, four years younger than Andersen, had to continue playing as much as possible, so he was the one who'd stay in Norfolk. Now Fasth has been dealt to Edmonton and Andersen is 15-3 with a 2.12 GAG, and the Ducks have decided Andersen is plenty good enough to serve as Hiller's backup for the post-season.
