Fitzpatrick was released from his professional tryout with the Lightning on Saturday and returned to AHL Syracuse.

With Jordan Binnington locked up long term and Colten Ellis and Joel Hofer in the system, it seems Fitzpatrick was the odd man out, though he could still sign a minor-league contract to remain loosely tied to the organization.

The Blues demoted Fitzpatrick back to AHL San Antonio on Saturday, Jim Thomas of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Fitzpatrick saw a brief promotion from the minors following a couple of good games with AHL San Antonio, but he will now return to get some more seasoning at a place where the 20-year-old can receive ample playing time. Jordan Binnington was recalled to replace Fitzpatrick on the active roster.

Fitzpatrick has clearly impressed the Blues coaching staff in his first pro season, as he started out with ECHL Tulsa and won November's Rookie of the Month award. He was promoted to San Antonio when the Blues released backup goalie Chad Johnson and appeared in two games, recording a .913 save percentage. Fitzpatrick leaped over Ville Husso, who was though to be Jake Allen's future successor but has struggled this year, in the goaltender pecking order. The 20-year-old's likely won't make a start, but Allen has been pulled plenty of times this season to open the door for Fitzpatrick to make his NHL debut.

Fitzpatrick will compete for the No. 2 role with AHL San Antonio, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.

Fitzpatrick is coming off an up and down 2017-18 in the Canadian juniors, but he ended it on a high note with QMJHL and Memorial Cup championships. The 20-year-old netminder was a huge part of Acadie-Bathurst Titan's playoff run, as he notched a .925 save percentage and 2.10 GAA to win 16 of 20 games. Making AHL San Antonio would generate huge strides for Fitzpatrick's development, but he'll be battling Jordan Binnington, who is coming off an excellent season with AHL Providence. Fitzpatrick still has junior eligibility and Binnington does not, so returning Fitzpatrick to Canada could keep both goalies on the ice.
