Cole inked an honorary deal with Carolina to allow him to retire as a member of the Hurricanes, Lindsay Kramer of Syracuse.com reports.

Cole was drafted by Carolina in the third round of the 1998 NHL Draft and spent nine seasons with the club, before making additional stops with Edmonton, Montreal, Dallas and Detroit. All told, the Clarkson University product played in 892 NHL games in which he registered 265 goals, 267 assists and 659 PIM. Part of the Stanley Cup champions in 2006, Cole also suited up for the United States in 20 contests from 2005-07, including the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Cole (spinal cord contusion) is reportedly done for the season, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports. Per the report, that extends to the postseason, assuming the Wings qualify. In 11 games since coming over in a trade with the Stars, Cole notched three goals and six points for the Red Wings. The veteran forward is slated to become a free agent this offseason.

All three forwards missed Thursday's game against the Bruins, despite early reports suggesting that Cole and Datsyuk would play.

Cole didn't skate during Wednesday's practice, but the Red Wings still seem optimistic that he'll be back after a four-game absence. His status should be verified one way or the other after Thursday's morning skate.

Cole (upper body) has been officially ruled out for Sunday's game, the Detroit News reports. Cole did not even make the trip with the team to New York for the matchup with the Islanders as he continues to work back from an upper body injury. The Wings return home Tuesday to host Ottawa, a game for which Cole should be deemed questionable to play.
