For those still wondering, Chris Drury's buyout by the New York Rangers still counts toward the cap. Even with the buyout of Drury the Rangers still have $1,364,666 remaining. With the team virtually set they have a little wiggle room if a roster spot should become open.

Chris Drury retired from NHL on Friday after 12 seasons in the league. He was bought out by the New York Rangers this off-season. Drury appeared in 892 career regular season games with Colorado, Calgary, Buffalo and the Rangers, racking up 225 goals and 615 points. He was regarded as a clutch player in the playoffs with 47 goals, including 17 game-winners, and 89 points coming in 135 contests. He claimed the Stanley Cup in 2001 with the Avalanche. We wish Drury the best in his retirement.

The New York Rangers have officially bought out the remainder of Chris Drury's contract. The Rangers will pay approximately $3.716 million against the 2011-12 salary cap, and about $1.667 million in 2012-13 as a result. Drury will become an unrestricted free agent on Friday and the Rangers wished him well. "Chris is a consummate professional, a tremendous competitor and an even better person," said president and GM Glen Sather in a statement. "He gave his heart and soul to the Rangers organization in his time here and we wish him the best in his future endeavors."

The New York Post is reporting that the Rangers will complete the buyout of Chris Drury's contract today. He has reportedly decided against applying for a medical exception due to a left knee condition and will become an unrestricted free agent. He can agree to a one-year contract, with bonuses, because he was on the Rangers' injured reserve for more than 100 days, which should make his addition to another team more attractive. Drury appeared in just 24 games in 2010-11 after breaking his finger twice and having to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery.

Chris Drury reportedly has a degenerative condition in his left knee that might prevent the team from buying out his contract. Drury comes with a $7,050,000 annual cap hit. If the report is true, Drury might not be able to play next season because of the condition. If Drury is put on the long-term injury reserve during the preseason, then his cap hit will come off the books. However, the team can't put him on the list during the summer, which means it could be a factor when they're trying to sign free agents. Teams can exceed the cap by up to 10% during the off-season.
