Rust (hand) was placed on long-term injured reserve Tuesday, ruling him out for at least the first 11 games of the season, Dave Molinari of DK on Pittsburgh Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Due to the 24-day requirement, Rust will be forced to miss the first 11 games, instead of just 10. The winger likely would have started the year on the second line alongside Evgeni Malkin, but could see the spot taken over by Brandon Tanev. Given the 26-year-old Rust's versatility, he likely will play all over the Penguins' lineup this year, which makes him a risky option in season-long formats, but a potential boon for DFS players when in a top-six role.

Rust had to go to the locker room after blocking a shot with his hand in Saturday's preseason game against the Sabres, Dave Molinari of DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Penguins are experiencing a worst-case scenario in their final preseason tilt, as Sidney Crosby also had to exit this one after blocking a shot. Rust will hope to return in time for Thursday's season opener against these same Sabres.

Rust finished Tuesday's 3-2 shootout loss to Carolina with two assists.
EDGE Analysis
Playing in just his second game since missing nine due to injury, Rust played a part in both Pittsburgh goals Tuesday night. The two helpers move the winger up to 33 points in 2018-19, just five back of last season's career-best, 38-point campaign.

Rust registered three shots, two hits and one block in Sunday's defeat to Philadelphia.
EDGE Analysis
Rust was making his first appearance in the lineup since Feb. 26 against Columbus. While the winger won't replace Evgeni Malkin's scoring touch, his reintroduction to the lineup at least gives coach Mike Sullivan options and prevents the team from having to promote a player from the minors. For the time being, Rust figures to slot into the second-line with Teddy Blueger and Phil Kessel.

Rust (lower body) is expected to suit up for Sunday's game against the Flyers.
EDGE Analysis
Rust missed the last nine games after suffering an injury in a Feb. 26 matchup against Columbus. The 26-year-old has a career-high 17 goals this season and will be a welcomed addition to the Penguins' deep forward group.

Rust (lower body) is a game-time decision for Sunday's matchup with the Flyers, Wes Crosby of NHL.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Rust has missed the last nine games with this injury, but was a full participant in practice Friday for the first time since sustaining the injury. Of course, more information should become available closer to puck drop. If the 26-year-old winger is a go, he should slide back into a top-six role.

Rust (lower body) won't be in the lineup for Saturday's game against St. Louis.
EDGE Analysis
Rust was a full participant at practice for the first time since suffering his lower-body injury Friday, so he's clearly trending in the right direction, but he'll have to wait for Sunday's matchup with Philadelphia for his next opportunity to rejoin the lineup. Once cleared, the 26-year-old winger will likely return to a top-six role.

Rust (lower body) ditched the non-contact sweater for Friday's practice session and could return during Pittsburgh's upcoming back-to-back, Sam Kasan of Pens Inside Scoop reports.
EDGE Analysis
Rust appears to be trending in the right direction and could be an option for coach Mike Sullivan for either Saturday or Sunday's clash with the Blues and Flyers, respectively. The winger was filling a top-six role alongside Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel prior to getting hurt, but the emergence of Teddy Blueger could relegated Rust to a bottom-six assignment to start.

Rust (lower body) was on the ice in a non-contact sweater for Thursday's game-day skate, Michelle Crechiolo of Pens Inside Scoop reports.
EDGE Analysis
Rust won't be ready to return to action versus the Sabres on Thursday, but the fact that he made the trip with the team and was able to skate are both steps in the right direction. With Zach Aston-Reese (lower body) facing a long-term absence, the Pens could certainly use Rust. For now, Teddy Blueger will continue to slot in on the second line, a spot that will likely go to Rust once the Michigan native is cleared to play.

Rust is expected to miss some time, as coach Mike Sullivan told reporters, "Rust is longer term with a lower-body injury."
EDGE Analysis
The bench boss didn't provide a specific timeline for Rust's recovery, but at best, the winger should probably be considered week-to-week until the team provides more information. In need of a player to fill out the lineup in Rust's absence, the leading candidate figures to be Theodor Blueger, who racked up four points in nine games during his previous stint in the NHL. Meanwhile, Dominik Simon could see an uptick in ice time and figures to join Jared McCann and Nick Bjugstad on the third line.
