Through 26 games, Smith has tallied six helpers, 37 PIM and 35 hits, but the back of the net continues to elude him. Considering the blueliner has never scored more than five goals in a year, long stretches without one probably doesn't phase him. The 2007 first-round pick is clearly more of a defensive-minded player and will offer minimal value even in the deepest of formats.

Smith was upset about being assessed a five-minute major penalty and ejection for inteference on Ottawa's Mark Borowiecki in Sunday's 3-0 win, Newsday's Steve Zipay reports.

The harsh punishment was assessed to Smith in the third period as he and Borowiecki were racing to a loose puck in the corner. While Borowiecki was injured on the play, Smith's actions hardly looked like they warranted anything more than a minor penalty, so the rearguard's chances of getting suspended are slim to none. His teammates picked up the slack on the ensuing penalty kill, surrendering just one shot in those five minutes.

After watching the past six games from the press box, Smith will be in the lineup against the Blue Jackets on Friday.

The phrase 'healthy scratch' generally is considered cringeworthy in the fantasy realm, as there's no sense wasting a roster spot on a guy who barely plays, but then again, Smith could use this next contest as motivation to show the Blueshirts and fantasy owners alike what they'd been missing. He's added two assists with a plus-2 rating over 11 games this season.

Smith failed to get on the scoresheet in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Coyotes, but did contribute a plus-3 rating and two shots on goal.

While Smith's been a non-factor offensively with just two assists in nine games, his plus-3 rating is tied for best on the team. Smith's never topped 20 points in a season, but his 318 penalty minutes in 318 career games give the former Red Wings blueliner a niche role in deeper formats.

After having a poor performance against Toronto on Saturday that saw him on the ice for only 14:49, Smith will get an evening in the press box. Since this comes on a night where the Rangers are dressing seven defensemen, this certainly isn't an encouraging sign for Smith's playing time. The 28-year-old will look to get back on the ice Tuesday against St. Louis.
