Coleman signed a three-year, $5.4 million contract with the Devils on Tuesday, Chris Ryan of NJ Advance Media reports.

After becoming a restricted free agent, Coleman ultimately became arbitration eligible and had a hearing scheduled for July 22. But, with the two sides able to agree on terms with five days to spare, Coleman will avoid having to go through that process. Coleman appeared in 79 games for the Devils last season, recording 13 goals and 12 assists.

Coleman was among 44 players to have filed for salary arbitration ahead of Thursday's deadline, per NHLPA.com.

It's likely the expansion draft had something to do with the fact that there were fewer players going the arbitration route ahead of last season. In his first full season with the Devils, Coleman registered 13 goals, 12 assists and 146 shots in 79 outings. The 26-year-old figures to fill out a bottom-six role for New Jersey this upcoming season, but should be capable of providing solid depth scoring. If the Texas native doesn't sign a long-term deal over the summer, he can sign his offer sheet for $726,000.

Coleman doesn't produce enough offense to be considered a desirable option in most season-long formats, but he's an above-average bottom-six contributor and a key member of the Devils' penalty-killing unit, so he's far more valuable to his real team than fantasy owners. He'll be a restricted free agent this offseason, but it'd be surprising to see New Jersey let him walk.

Coleman scored a pair of goals, his first two-goal game of his career, in an 8-3 win over Vegas on Wednesday.

EDGE Analysis

Two goals is a nice outing and would have made Coleman a great play in a daily league if you used him, but it also makes up 22 percent of his goal total for the entire season. The reality is that points don't come often for Coleman, and they certainly don't arrive often enough to make chasing them worthwhile. He simply doesn't produce enough to make him an option in most leagues.

Coleman's most significant contributions came on the penalty kill, as his 2:30 of shorthanded ice time was just six seconds behind Travis Zajac's team-leading total. While trade deadline acquisition Michael Grabner dressed for this one, fellow addition Patrick Maroon did not. Given Coleman's modest offensive output (15 points in 60 games), he's a serious candidate to come out of the lineup once Maroon's ready to go for his new club.

The goal stood as the winner. Coleman now has three points in his last two games after a 10-game point drought. He is a serviceable role player, but nothing more.
