Smith is expected to start at wide receiver Sunday against the Raiders and could help fill the target void left by the absence of Michael Thomas (ankle), Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

While Smith won't be a one-for-one replacement, he'll be one of several passing-game options the Saints are hoping will step up while Thomas -- who recorded an NFL-record 149 receptions in 2019 -- misses his first game in four years. Quarterback Drew Brees is expected to lean most heavily on Emmanuel Sanders, Alvin Kamara and Jared Cook to absorb some extra target volume, but Thomas' absence should also help tertiary pass catchers like Smith, Taysom Hill, Bennie Fowler, Deonte Harris, Ty Montgomery and Latavius Murray. Smith is still difficult to trust as anything more than a punt play at receiver in DFS contests.

Smith could be in for an expanded workload after Michael Thomas suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 1 against Tampa Bay.

EDGE Analysis

As reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Thomas hasn't been ruled out for Week 2 against Las Vegas, but there's a chance he's forced to sit it out or is limited even if he does play. That would likely open things up for Smith, who saw just one reception for four yards on one target in Week 1.

Smith drew high praise from head coach Sean Payton in a recent press conference.

EDGE Analysis

"He's an important part of what we're doing offensively," Payton said, while noting that Smith came into training camp in shape and ready to play. It's an encouraging sound byte, but Smith will need to make it happen on the field as he looks to bounce back from an 18/234/5 receiving line posted in 2019.

Smith failed to bring in his only target in the Saints' 26-20 overtime loss to the Vikings on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

The boom-or-bust wideout busted in a big way in Sunday's loss, drawing only one target and ending with a goose egg in the receiving column. In his second year with New Orleans, Smith scored five times, matching that total from his rookie campaign. Despite the touchdowns, Smith failed to surpass 20 yards receiving six times in the regular season, including two games without a catch. Smith played in just 11 games in 2019, and he'll look to get healthy and take the next step forward in his third year.

Smith caught all five of his targets for 56 yards and a touchdown in the Saints' 42-10 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Smith ends the regular season with his highest receiving output of the 2019 campaign. In the final eight games of the season, Smith produced 13 receptions for 159 receiving yards and four touchdowns, including three scores in the final four weeks. Despite the lowly production on the year, Smith has developed into a trusted red-zone option for Drew Brees.

Smith brought in one of two targets for 13 yards in the Saints' 38-28 win over the Titans on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Smith snapped his scoring streak at two games, failing to cross the end zone in Sunday's win. Though he produced touchdowns in three of his last four games, Smith's hot streak was bound to subside given his low target volume and output. The second-year man out of UCF has only accounted for one game of more than 30 receiving yards in 2019, giving him a rock-bottom basement.

Smith caught his only target for a 21-yard touchdown in the Saints' 34-7 win over the Colts on Monday.

EDGE Analysis

Smith scored his third touchdown in four games and has now crossed the goal line in back-to-back contests. Apparently fully recovered from an ankle injury that cost him five games earlier in the season, he's become a viable scoring option for Drew Brees in the receiving game late in the year. Despite the scores, Smith has totaled just six receptions for 77 yards on 10 targets in his last four games, making him difficult to trust for fantasy purposes.

Smith caught two of four targets for 29 yards and a touchdown in the Saints' 48-46 loss to the 49ers on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

He caught his second touchdown in three weeks, though he was only targeted four times on a day Drew Brees tossed 40 passes. Smith looked like he was going to be the hero of an intense shootout, crossing the goal line with just over 50 seconds remaining in the contest to put New Orleans up 46-45. Instead, the Niners marched down the field and kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired, spoiling New Orleans' comeback. Smith's arrow has been trending up over the last several weeks, but he's extremely difficult to trust on a weekly basis, especially in the fantasy playoffs.

Smith caught both of his targets for 14 yards in the Saints' 26-18 win over the Falcons on Thursday.

EDGE Analysis

As usual, Smith was a non-factor Thursday, seeing just two targets on the night. The game brings his season receiving line to 9/115/2, and Smith can't be trusted in fantasy lineups.

Smith brought in one of three targets for 13 yards and a touchdown in the Saints' 34-31 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Smith crossed the goal line for the first time since Week 1, though his touchdown grab was his only look from Drew Brees. Smith started the year on solid footing, but in four games played since Week 2, he's accounted for just 26 receiving yards and a touchdown on two receptions. He's seen a meager 11 targets through six games this season and doesn't belong on fantasy rosters outside the deepest of leagues.
