Ex-Giants WR Steve Smith is retiring from football. A 2007 second-round pick of the Giants, the "other" Steve Smith is hanging up his cleats just three weeks after his 28th birthday. He signed with the Bucs early last month. Smith is technically healthy, but was simply never the same after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee in 2010. The forbear to Victor Cruz in the slot in New York, Smith caught 107 passes for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009. He ended up catching just 73 passes over his final 27 games, spending 2011 in Philadelphia and 2012 in St. Louis.

Rams declared WR Steve Smith, RB Terrance Ganaway, QB Austin Davis, OT Joe Barksdale, DT Matt Conrath, TE Cory Harkey, and LB Sammy Brown inactive for Sunday's regular season finale against the Seahawks. Smith appeared in nine games for the Rams in 2012 and caught just 14 passes for 131 yards. He won't be back with the team next year and will likely struggle to find work. All of the Week 17 inactives are healthy scratches.

Steve Smith caught four passes for 26 yards in St. Louis' Week 7 loss to the Packers. The catches were a season high for Smith, who now boasts a 11/114/0 line through five games. Although he's been a moderately bigger part of the game-plan in Danny Amendola's absence, Smith remains well off the fantasy radar.

Steve Smith caught two passes for 18 yards in St. Louis' Week 6 loss to the Dolphins. Smith apparently started in the slot as the Rams began life without Danny Amendola, but was targeted only two times. He's now caught more than two passes just once in four games, and has only 88 yards on the season. He remains invisible for fantasy purposes.

Rams declared WR Steve Smith, OT Rodger Saffold, RB Terrance Ganaway, DE Eugene Sims, DT Matt Conrath, and S Matt Daniels inactive for Thursday night's Week 5 matchup with the Cardinals. Kellen Davis is the third quarterback. Smith is a healthy inactive for the second straight week, and rookies Chris Givens and Brian Quick will continue to see increased snaps. Saffold is battling a knee injury and Sims suffered a concussion in Week 4. This means that Steven Jackson is active.

Rams declared WR Steve Smith and RB Isaiah Pead inactive for Week 4 against the Seahawks. Both players are healthy scratches after never appearing on the Week 4 injury report. Smith has just five catches for 70 yards after creating a decent amount of buzz in camp, while Pead has yet to notch a carry and proven shaky on returns. Second-round pick Brian Quick is active in Smith's place, while undrafted rookie Terrance Ganaway will back-up Steven Jackson and Daryl Richardson. Also inactive for the Rams are QB Austin Davis, DT Matt Conrath, OT Rodger Saffold, S Matt Daniels and DT Jermell Cudjo.

Steve Smith hasn't missed a single practice at Rams camp. It's a positive sign for a player that has struggled with knee issues for two years. Smith has run with the first- and second-team offense, drawing rave reviews from coach Jeff Fisher. He'll be battling with Brandon Gibson, Brian Quick and others for snaps come Week 1.

There continues to be a "very strong buzz" surrounding WR Steve Smith at Rams training camp, according to Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports. With Brandon Gibson and Danario Alexander sidelined by hamstring injuries, Smith has emerged as the favorite to start opposite Danny Amendola. Rookie Brian Quick has also come on strong after a slow camp start, opening the possibility of joining Smith and Amendola in three-wide sets.

Steve Smith and Danny Amendola were the Rams starting wideouts in Sunday's preseason opener. The Rams kept their starters on the field for just two possessions. Smith had two catches for 14 yards on three targets and Amendola had one catch for six yards on two targets. The two veterans remain ahead of rookies Brian Quick and Chris Givens on the muddled wideout depth chart.
