According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Eagles doctors believe Steve Smith (knee) could be ready to play by mid-October. Smith is still likely headed for PUP to begin the season, as the Eagles' Week 7 bye falls between October 16 and 30. The fact that the organization guaranteed Smith $2 million indicates that they are expecting contributions from him this season, but the seriousness of Smith's injury and a loaded Eagles receiver corps will make that tough. He's an in-season insurance policy.

Eagles signed WR Steve Smith, formerly of the Giants, to a one-year contract. Prevailing opinion had Smith likely to re-sign with the Giants, but their team doctors determined that his surgically repaired knee was too much of a medical risk. The Eagles' doctors are more optimistic, according to CSN Philly's Reuben Frank, and believe Smith could return at midseason. It's still not a great landing spot for fantasy value. A likely hobbled Smith won't beat out Jason Avant for the Eagles' slot receiver job, and he remains likely to open the season on the PUP list. Smith isn't worth a pick in fantasy drafts.

After meeting with free agent Steve Smith, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said that the receiver's recovery from knee surgery "is going to be a long haul." In other words, the Giants are in no rush to sign Smith to a contract. The earliest the slot receiver will be ready is midseason, and even that may be optimistic. Smith is off the fantasy radar after catching 107 balls in 2009.

Sources tell the NY Daily News that free agent WR Steve Smith (microfracture surgery) won't be able to practice at all in camp. Fear in the Smith camp is that he could miss "several games," making him a logical candidate to open the year on PUP. Smith was in New York visiting the Giants Monday, but no contract was agreed to. The G-Men can afford to take their time because no other teams want to deal with Smith's knee. A source did say an offer was made, "but it's still far below what he's looking for."

Free agent Steve Smith (knee) will make an official "visit" with the Giants this week. Smith has no other visits scheduled, as teams are leery of his surgically repaired knee. Smith will catch up with the Giants front office and coaching staff, exchange a few numbers, and give an update on his knee. Neither side appears to be in any hurry.
