Former Texans RB Steve Slaton has signed with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts. Now 28 years old, Slaton's big-league career is likely over. He hasn't appeared in an NFL game since 2011 with Miami, and his last known free-agent workout occurred in 2012 with the Broncos. Slaton was the No. 6 overall fantasy running back in 2008, but was never the same following a spinal fusion surgery.

The Broncos will work out free agent RB Steve Slaton on Tuesday. CBS' Jason La Canfora reports the Broncos will work out a host of free agent backs with Willis McGahee (knee) out indefinitely. Slaton worked out for the Jets last week, but was passed over in favor of Kahlil Bell. He wouldn't be any higher than third on the depth chart if he landed in Denver.

The Jets intend to sign a free-agent running back Tuesday.

Despite working out both Steve Slaton and Ryan Grant, the Lions reportedly have no plans to add a running back this week. The Lions are getting Mikel Leshoure back from suspension, and there's talk of an expanded role for Joique Bell. It sounds like they were simply doing due diligence on Slaton and Grant to update their emergency list in case of an injury.

The Lions will workout free agent RB Steve Slaton next week. Slaton has received interest from the Bears and Redskins since being released earlier this month. With Mikel Leshoure eligible to return from suspension in Week 3, he would be used strictly as an insurance policy behind Kevin Smith.

The Redskins were said to be in trade talks for Slaton on a deal that would have sent Anthony Armstrong to the Dolphins Friday, but it never happened. The Skins then balked at claiming Slaton on waivers, and have reportedly expressed no interest in him since. Thus, it sounds like the Fins were behind all the trade talk. Either that, or the Redskins know something we don't about Slaton.

Dolphins released RB Steve Slaton. The Dolphins and Redskins couldn't complete a rumored trade for the fifth-year pro, though CBS' Jason La Canfora reports Slaton could still end up in Washington. Slaton has carried the ball just 43 times the past two seasons, add only six catches.

The Redskins are working on a trade that would send WR Anthony Armstrong to the Dolphins for RB Steve Slaton. Talks are "ongoing." There are plenty of connections here as Slaton played for current Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan in Houston and Armstrong spent 2008 on the Dolphins' practice squad. Slaton is currently fourth on the running back depth chart in Miami and hasn't earned significant playing time since 2009, but would at least threaten for a role in Washington. The Shanahans aren't afraid to give anyone carries and Slaton fits best in the zone-blocking scheme.

The Miami Herald believes RBs Steve Slaton and Marcus Thigpen are competing for one roster spot. This is interesting because it suggests Slaton is on the roster bubble after working with the first-team offense when training camp opened exactly one month ago. Despite the sterling offseason reports, Slaton will face off with Thigpen, a former CFL standout who is also seeing reps at wide receiver, in Wednesday's preseason finale.
