The Anderson Herald Bulletin's George Bremer says the Colts "could look to reunite" free agent CB Sean Smith with ex-Dolphins teammate CB Vontae Davis. Smith, of course, is in limbo with the Dolphins on whether he will be franchise-tagged or not. According to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post, 25-year-old Smith is said to be looking for $8 million annually on his next contract. Currently, the Colts are about $43 million under the salary cap for 2013. Smith would certainly be an upgrade on Jerraud Powers and company.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald insists the Dolphins will not use the franchise tag on free agent CB Sean Smith. "The Dolphins will NOT use their tag on Sean Smith," tweeted Salguero. "Period." The Herald and the Palm Beach Post have been in complete disagreement over this issue for the entire offseason. The Post reported earlier on Monday that Smith was "preparing" for the tag, but "rooting strongly against it." Teams could start tagging players on Monday, and they can do so all the way up until March 4.

The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero says the Dolphins and impending free agent CB Sean Smith are "not close" on a new contract, and adds that Smith will not be franchised. The Herald has always been of the belief that Smith will either get a new deal from the Dolphins or he will reach the free-agent market, while the Palm Beach Post reported at the end of December that Smith would "almost certainly" be tagged if a long-term agreement wasn't reached. Smith is tentatively expected to target $8-10 million annually on his next deal, but Miami doesn't value him at that price.

Free agent CB Sean Smith is expected to seek $8-10 million annually on the open market. Smith and his agent anticipate a deal somewhere between Brandon Carr (five years, $50 million) and Jason McCourty (five years, $43 million). Per the Miami Herald, the Dolphins don't believe Smith is worth that much and for good reason. Although very physically gifted and only 25, Smith struggles versus smaller, quicker receivers, and Pro Football Focus charted him with more combined first downs and touchdowns allowed than any NFL cornerback in 2012.

The Miami Herald confirms that CB Sean Smith is likely to reach free agency without a deal in place with the Dolphins. Smith and his agent are using Jason McCourty's six-year, $43 million contract as a baseline in negotiations, and plugged-in columnist Armando Salguero considers that too rich even for the cap-rich Dolphins. Per Salguero, the Fins view Smith as more of a "good player" as opposed to a "game changer or playmaker."

Per the Palm Beach Post, the Dolphins and impending free agent CB Sean Smith are "far apart" on contract talks. Smith is said to be seeking a deal similar to the one Jason McCourty received from the Titans in August -- six years, $43 million, $20 million guaranteed. Miami is reportedly valuing Smith at a much lesser amount. The Dolphins will have until March 9 to negotiate with their long, physical corner, but it's almost certain that Smith will test the free-agent market.

Contrary to a previous report to the contrary, the Miami Herald insists the Dolphins "have no intention" of using the franchise tag on CB Sean Smith. Smith has been a solid starter, coming in especially handy against physical receivers, but he's not deemed worthy of the $10 million tag reserved for elite corners. According to the Herald, the Dolphins would have to "think long and hard" before offering even half of that $10 million on an annual basis. Smith will likely opt to test free-agent waters.

According to the Palm Beach Post, the Dolphins will "almost certainly" use the franchise tag on CB Sean Smith if they can't agree on a long-term deal this offseason. The Post lists Brian Hartline as the only other option for the franchise tag in Miami, but the team may not consider him a true No. 1 receiver. Smith, 25, has the measurables at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds and plays a position that every team covets. He's tied a career-high with 12 pass break-ups and two interceptions this season, and he always shadows the opposing team's No. 1 receiver.

Dolphins CB Sean Smith (knee) "could" play in Week 17 versus the Patriots. After Smith's Monday MRI only revealed a bone bruise, Miami's top cornerback expressed a high level of relief that the injury wasn't more serious. If Smith plays on Sunday, he'd likely shadow Brandon Lloyd, whom he held to just one catch for ten yards in Week 12. More importantly, Smith is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason and should be highly-coveted.
