A source told the Palm Beach Post that there's a zero percent chance of free agent CB Sean Smith re-signing with the Dolphins.
It's an exaggeration, but it's further confirmation that the two sides are far apart on potential terms. Smith wants to break the bank as a shutdown-caliber man-to-man corner, while the Dolphins think he's replaceable in DC Kevin Coyle's zone scheme. Look for Smith to land with the highest bidder once free agency opens next week.

Free agent Sean Smith insists he's "never talked to any other team besides the Miami Dolphins."
According to Smith, former teammate Vontae Davis got the impression Smith was talking to the Chiefs after Smith told him he'd been in contact with new DBs coach Al Harris. Smith claims he was just congratulating Harris. We don't expect the Dolphins to pursue tampering charges.

According to former teammate Vontae Davis, free agent Sean Smith is "talking" to the Chiefs.
"I seen my dude Sean Smith last night he said (he's) talking to KC him & (Brandon) Flowers will make a good duo," Davis tweeted. That, of course, is tampering, but such talks are rarely policed. The Chiefs had a big hole opposite Flowers after letting Brandon Carr walk last season, and have relatively few high picks in this year's draft. That could mean they'll fill needs via free agency.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, "maybe the most coveted" name on the free-agent cornerback market is Sean Smith.
Rapoport lists the Eagles, 49ers, Buccaneers, and Lions as teams that "value" Smith. All are cornerback needy, and Philadelphia reportedly likes Smith "a ton." Rapoport suggests the Eagles may let free agent Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie walk, sign Smith, and bring back Nnamdi Asomugha on a restructured contract.

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have talked with free agent CB Sean Smith "the past couple days," but that the sides "still have plenty of distance to bridge."
Reporter Barry Jackson characterizes the situation as "fluid," and confirms the sides began the week with "vastly different views of (Smith's) value." Smith is reportedly seeking "at least" $24 million guaranteed. The franchise or transition tag may be his best bet to remain in Miami.

CSN Philly's Geoff Mosher says the Eagles are interested in free agent CB Sean Smith, but at the right price.
Smith's price continues to rise, and latest reports are that he's seeking "at least" $24 million guaranteed. Philadelphia is bone dry in the secondary with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie a free agent and Nnamdi Asomugha looking at possibly getting released. After those two, there isn't much to work with.

Free agent CB Sean Smith is reportedly looking for "at least" $24 million guaranteed on his next deal.
Smith and his agent were said to be using Titans CB Jason McCourty's contract as a baseline for negotiations, and McCourty received $20 million guaranteed on his six-year, $43 million deal. Smith, 25, is looking for outrageous numbers, and a source close to Smith "laughed" when asked if there have been productive talks with the Dolphins. The Palm Beach Post says not to rule out Miami using the transition tag on Smith.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland described a recent meeting with free agent CB Sean Smith's agent as "optimistic."
"But we still have a long way to go," added Ireland. Smith is seen as a candidate for the franchise tag by the Palm Beach Post, and Ireland hinted earlier in the day that he knew who he was going to use it on already. Smith is said to be seeking $8 million annually on his next contract.

GM Jeff Ireland said the Dolphins will likely use the franchise tag.
Furthermore, Ireland hinted that he already knows who he is going to tag, but declined to reveal a name. The two most logical candidates are CB Sean Smith and DT Randy Starks, although the Miami Herald has been reporting that Smith will not be tagged. Jake Long is also a free agent, but tagging him would cost $15.365 million.
