Sanchez injured his non-throwing hand while working in the Broncos' weight room last week during the team's strength and conditioning program. Although his surgery was minor, Sanchez is still likely to be sidelined when Denver begins OTAs next week. His expected short-term absence leaves rookie first-rounder Paxton Lynch and second-year player Trevor Siemian as the only healthy quarterbacks on the Broncos' roster. Even though Lynch should benefit from seeing extra practice reps, Denver will also be eager to have the veteran Sanchez back available to continue his on-field adjustment to a new offense.

The Sanchize has just one year left on his contract, and the Broncos drafting a first-round quarterback might impact Sanchez less than the addition of a player like Brian Hoyer. Head coach Gary Kubiak was very complimentary of rookie Paxton Lynch's skillset and ability to adjust to Denver's offense quickly, but expect Sanchez to hold onto the starting job so long as he plays within himself and leans heavily on the team's running game and defense. Remember, Sanchez and the departed Brock Osweiler have posted identical 86.6 passer ratings since the beginning of 2014.

Given the fact that 2015 seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian is the only other quarterback on the roster, Sanchez's comments are not unfounded. It'd be shocking if the team didn't add at least one other quarterback via trade, free agency or the draft before May 1, however. Sanchez has hardly impressed since game-managing the Jets to consecutive conference championship games in his first two seasons. He's now better known for his stumbles, and butt fumbles, than success throwing the football. Though it's surprising that the defending champions are heading into the offseason with a player of Sanchez's mediocre pedigree leading the way, it'd be inaccurate to say that he's a definite downgrade from Brock Osweiler. Since the beginning of 2014, Sanchez and Osweiler have each thrown over 280 passes and have posted identical 86.6 quarterback ratings.

The Broncos have acquired Sanchez from the Eagles in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2017, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

With both Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel in the fold, it makes perfect sense for the Eagles to deal Sanchez, with Denver a logical spot for him to land, in the wake of the retirement of Peyton Manning and the free agent departure of Brock Osweiler. With the Broncos, Sanchez presumably slots in ahead of fellow QB Trevor Siemian, but we suspect that the team will continue to explore other options at the position in the coming days, so it's too early to get an accurate read on Denver's plans for Sanchez for this coming season.

With Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel having both signed new contracts with the Eagles, Sanchez appears to be the odd man out in the team's QB equation. The 29-year-old started two games for the Eagles in 2015 and given the experience that he brings to the table on that front, it's not hard to imagine a QB-hungry team snapping Sanchez up if/when the Eagles elect to move on from him.

Sanchez completed 19 of 27 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns during Thursday's crushing loss at Detroit.

EDGE Analysis

Sanchez was under constant pressure from the Lions' resurgent pass rush, taking nine hits and getting sacked six times, yet he only committed one turnover, a fumble, on the Eagles' first drive of the second half. Facing a deficit of 31-7 at that point, he continued to truck along and finished with a quarterback rating (116.1) that belied an uninspiring performance from the Chip Kelly-coached squad. Because Sam Bradford (shoulder/concussion) is approaching a return to action, according to Albert Breer of NFL Network, Sanchez will likely serve in a reserve role in the Eagles' next tilt on Dec. 6 in New England.

Sanchez will start Thursday's game in Detroit, Geoff Mosher of CSN Philadelphia reports.

Earning his second start in a row for an inactive Sam Bradford (concussion/shoulder), Sanchez will direct the Eagles' offense against a Detroit defense that has given up multiple touchdown passes in six of 10 contests this season. However, in back-to-back appearances, Sanchez has completed 40 of 64 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns versus four interceptions.

Filling in for Sam Bradford (concussion, shoulder) in Week 11, Sanchez completed 26-of-41 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in a loss to the Bucs. On Thursday, Sanchez is slated to face a Lions team that is allowing an average of 250.5 passing yards per game overall, but is coming off two straight wins, by a combined tally of 36-29.

Sanchez looked great heading into the Eagles' final drive of the first half, completing 10 of 14 passes for 115 yards, two scores and no picks. From that point on however, Sanchez fell off, completing 16 of 27 passes for 146 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. Given how the game got away from Philadelphia late in the game, it is hard to grade Sanchez accurately as he was forced to pass in difficult circumstances. Still, Sunday was not the kind of performance that will challenge Sam Bradford's position atop the depth chart. With Bradford expected back in two weeks, it isn't worth it to pick up Sanchez.

With Sam Bradford officially ruled out, Sanchez will start at QB for the Eagles on Sunday against the Bucs, with Thad Lewis set to serve as his backup, NJ.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

With the Eagles playing again this coming Thursday against the Lions, and Bradford iffy, at best, for that contest, it looks like Sanchez will see the team's next two starts at QB. In Week 11, Sanchez represents a solid bye week or injury plug-in, while taking aim at a Tampa Bay defense that has surrendered 19 passing TDs through nine contests to date. Only the Saints and Browns have allowed more.
