Lock will begin the 2022 season as the Seahawks' backup quarterback after coach Pete Carroll announced Geno Smith as the team's Week 1 starter following Friday's preseason loss at Dallas, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lock only had two opportunities during exhibition season due to a positive test for COVID-19, missing preseason Week 2 in the process. But he was up and down in his two chances, completing 24 of 39 passes for 273 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, rushing three times for seven yards and taking two sacks in close to six quarters of action. Ultimately, Smith's experience in the system (and likely his availability) won out in the end, and Lock now will be holding a clipboard to kick off his first year in Seattle.

Coach Pete Carroll said the competition between Lock and Geno Smith is even, adding that Lock will get a lot of snaps in the preseason finale Friday against Dallas, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lock was scheduled to start the second preseason game last Thursday against Chicago before he tested positive for COVID-19. He returned to practice over the weekend and should now get a bunch of snaps for the second time this preseason, having previously gone 11-of-15 passing for 102 yards and two TDs in the Seattle's preseason opener. Smith also played well in the initial preseason game, but in the second contest he failed to produce any points on seven drives.

Coach Pete Carroll intends for Lock to play "a lot" in Friday's preseason finale against the Cowboys, Brady Henderson of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lock missed the team's previous preseason game due to COVID-19, but he should get a chance to make up for lost time with plenty of playing time Friday. Carroll added that the team is unlikely to decide on a starting quarterback between Lock and Geno Smith (knee) until closer to the regular season. Still, a strong performance Friday would go a long way in helping Lock make his case for the Week 1 starting job.

Lock (illness) returned to practice Sunday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lock sat out this past Thursday's preseason game (which he had been in line to start) against the Bears after testing positive for COVID-19, but he's back on the field Sunday and thus is a candidate to start this coming Friday's preseason finale against the Cowboys. At this stage, the Seahawks' unofficial posted depth chart lists Geno Smith (knee bruise) ahead of Lock, but the team has yet to announce which of the two QBs is slated to start Seattle's regular-season opener against the Broncos on Monday, Sept. 12.

Lock will not play in Thursday's preseason matchup with the Bears after testing positive for COVID-19, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
This is unfortunate timing for Lock, as he handled all of the first-team reps at practice Tuesday and was slated to draw the start against Chicago. While coach Pete Carroll maintains that Geno Smith is the team's No. 1 quarterback, the starting opportunity would have been a chance for Lock to make an impression. He will now have to wait until he's cleared to return to practice in order to prepare for his next chance to see game action, which would be the Seahawks' preseason finale on Aug. 26. In his absence, Smith and Jacob Eason are the lone healthy quarterbacks on the Seahawks' roster.

Coach Pete Carroll announced Lock will start Thursday's preseason game against the Bears, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
For the first time since training camp opened, Lock handled all of the first-team reps at practice Tuesday, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. Afterward, Carroll told Condotta the development was part of the plan for the Seahawks' quarterback competition but reiterated that Geno Smith remains the team's No. 1 quarterback. It's unclear how much run Lock will get with the starters Thursday, but if the breakdown is similar to preseason Week 1, he may play one half before handing the offense over to Smith.

Lock completed 11 of 15 pass attempts for 102 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while rushing once for three yards during the Seahawks' 32-25 preseason loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old has made strides in practice over the last few days, and coach Pete Carroll recently said that Lock will get more reps with the first-team offense in the near future. Lock played the second half during Saturday's preseason opener and accounted for the team's only two passing touchdowns during the narrow loss. Although Lock played well Saturday, Geno Smith also had an impressive performance, completing 10 of 15 pass attempts for 101 yards while rushing for a touchdown. Smith still appears to be the frontrunner for the starting job at quarterback in Seattle, but Lock has closed the gap recently.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday that Lock will get more reps with the first-team offense, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Seahawks have given Geno Smith every chance to run away with the starting job, but Smith -- who has taken most of the reps with the starting offense during training camp -- has struggled thus far, and Lock has shown enough flashes to make this a true competition. To that end, Carroll intends to have Lock and Smith rotate in with the first-team offense so that whomever wins the job will have familiarity with star receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Smith will start in Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers, but expect both quarterbacks to get some reps with the starters, though it's unclear how much Metcalf and Lockett will play in the exhibition.

Lock completed 18 of 27 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's team scrimmage, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lock spent four of five offensive drives with the second-team offense, where he played against the first-team defense. On the other side of the competition, Geno Smith handled nearly all the first-team reps on offense, where he battled against the second-team defense. Smith completed 10 of 19 passes for 94 yards. Lock had the inferior supporting cast and played against better competition, but he managed to put up better numbers anyway, despite those numbers being mediocre. Head coach Pete Carroll didn't make any judgements following the scrimmage, but Lock may have the edge heading into the preseason, which starts next Saturday against the Steelers.

Lock played with the second-team offense during Wednesday's practice, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Head coach Pete Carroll believes Lock still has a chance to win the starting job over Geno Smith, who is heading into his fourth season with the Seahawks. Carroll stated earlier in the offseason that Smith's knowledge of the system gives him an edge in the competition. However, Lock has enough tools relative to Smith to make this competition extend through the final preseason game. Through three seasons in the league, Lock has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 4,740 yards (6.7 YPA), 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
