49ers declared RB Brandon Jacobs and WR/KR Ted Ginn inactive for Week 1 against the Packers.
Neither Jacobs nor Ginn was expected to suit up this afternoon, but both players have a decent chance at returning in Week 2. Frank Gore should handle goal-line work, with Kendall Hunter mixing in on early downs and passing situations. Also inactive for the 49ers are QB Scott Tolzien, RB LaMichael James, OG Joe Looney, TE Garrett Celek and NT Ian Williams. James' deactivation at the expense of fellow rookie A.J. Jenkins comes as a mild surprise.

Brandon Jacobs (knee) missed 49ers practice again Friday and is not expected to be active Sunday against Green Bay.
Return specialist Ted Ginn (ankle) is also looking doubtful at best. With Jacobs out of the lineup, look for Frank Gore to handle any goal-line chances while Kendall Hunter mixes in on some early downs and passing situations. Jacobs' absence is a boost to Gore's Week 1 fantasy outlook. He'll be a strong RB2.

Brandon Jacobs (knee) and Ted Ginn (ankle) were both held out of 49ers practice Wednesday.
It bodes poorly for their Week 1 status, but neither Jacobs nor Ginn necessarily needs an entire week of practice to suit up on a Sunday. Both players should be considered doubtful until further notice, however.

Brandon Jacobs (knee) remains in the picture to be available for Week 1.
Per CSN Bay Area, Jacobs has made "noticeable progress." He did some light jogging on Thursday night, just one week after being spotted on crutches due to his left knee sprain. Expect some limited practices and a questionable tag for Jacobs next week.

Brandon Jacobs (knee) is still "limping around."
He won't suit up for San Francisco's preseason finale, and is looking doubtful for Week 1. Coach Jim Harbaugh recently said that Jacobs had shown enough to earn a roster spot, however. In line for goal-line touches, Jacobs could eventually be worth a look in touchdown-heavy leagues.

Coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) has done enough to earn a roster spot.
A deep backfield and Jacobs' recent knee couldn't push him off the roster. It's bad news for Frank Gore's fantasy value, as Jacobs figures to take over as the primary goal-line back once his knee returns to 100 percent, likely by Week 2 or 3. Kendall Hunter remains the primary backup to Gore.

The 49ers haven't ruled Brandon Jacobs (knee) out for Week 1.
"It's possible," coach Jim Harbaugh said. Jacobs was using crutches to get around at Monday's practice, but said he was "doing all right." With a healthy Frank Gore and an abundance of backfield depth, the 49ers don't have to rush Jacobs back. The odds are probably less than 50-50 he suits up for Week 1.

A Sunday MRI confirmed that Brandon Jacobs suffered "no major damage" to his left knee in Saturday night's preseason game.
No timetable has been provided, but Jacobs clearly avoided a significant injury and should be back in a matter of weeks. Whether he'll play in the season opener remains unclear. Jacobs has five preseason carries for 39 yards.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh stated after Saturday night's preseason game that Brandon Jacobs' left knee injury is not season ending.
Harbaugh says Jacobs' patellar tendon and ACL are both intact, and the injury is "not the you-don't-come-back-from variety." Harbaugh did acknowledge that Jacobs will miss "some time," but he's apparently escaped a severe tear or rupture of the knee. It sounds like a sprain, possibly a severe one. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that X-rays were negative, but Jacobs will have a Sunday MRI. The Niners will know how much action he'll miss after that.

Brandon Jacobs was carried off the field following what appeared to be a significant left knee injury in Saturday night's preseason game against the Texans.
Jacobs was down on the field for several minutes as Texans and 49ers players alike gathered around him in concern. The injury happened at the end of an eight-yard run and collision with Texans CB Kareem Jackson, who was also initially shaken up but appeared to emerge okay. Jacobs could bear no weight on his left leg afterwards, and was ultimately carted to the locker room. It's early, but we suspect Jacobs won't be playing football this season.
