Matthews' foot injury was likely sustained during Monday's practice considering that no information has been disclosed on the topic. If Matthews is held out of Wednesday's game against the Jazz, expect fellow shooting guard Seth Curry to see a boost in minutes. Along with Matthews, J.J. Barea was also held out of practice, so if Matthews and Barea are both out Wednesday it could take a toll on the Mavericks' shooting guard depth chart.

While that translated to a season-high scoring output for the swingman, it came about as inefficiently as possible. Matthews also racked up six fouls on the night, with his last infraction with 0.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter enabling the Rockets' James Harden to hit the game-winning free throw. It's clear Matthews is valued by the Mavericks, but his 29.1 percent mark from the field and 18.2 percent mark from three-point range has limited the impact of his otherwise solid averages of 17.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 treys in 39.3 minutes per game.

Matthews scored 13 points (3-16 FG, 2-10 3Pt, 5-6 FT) and added five rebounds, three assists and three steals across 40 minutes in Wednesday's 130-121 overtime loss to the Pacers.

As was the case throughout last season, Matthews was afforded plenty of run Wednesday, but his inefficient shooting dimmed the luster of his stat line. After averaging 12.5 points per game and hitting 189 treys in 2015-16, Matthews still shapes up as a reliable source of volume shooting and low-to-mid double-digit scoring while he's locked into a prominent role with the Mavs' top unit. However, a March 2015 Achilles tear seems to have robbed Matthews of some of his ability to get to the tin, forcing him to settle for more perimeter shots that have had a negative effect on his field-goal percentage. He'll likely remain a risk in that category again this season.

Matthews (hip) is expected to play in Friday's preseason matchup with the Suns, Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Sefko's report indicates the Mavericks expect to have all of their starters available, which means Matthews should be healthy enough to take the floor after sitting out Tuesday's outing versus the Thunder. Matthews averaged 33.9 minutes per game during the 2015-16 campaign, but seemingly struggled with his efficiency and will look to have a bounce back year in his eighth NBA season.

The move to hold Matthews out is purely precautionary, so there should be no concerns regarding the shooting guard's hip injury. As long as Matthews is held out of competition, look for Seth Curry to get some extended run at shooting guard.

Matthews, a Madison, Wis. native, received a nice reception from the Wisconsin crowd before the game, but that was the highlight of an otherwise bleak outing. While Matthews surpassed expectations by averaging 33.9 points per game and making 78 appearances last season upon returning from an Achilles tear, his efficiency took a massive hit, with his 38.8 percent mark from the field representing by a far a career-worst figure. A rebound to some degree should be expected during the upcoming season now that he's further removed from the devastating injury, but don't expect Matthews' production to match that of his prime years with the Trail Blazers.

Matthews scored 19 points (5-13 FG, 3-8 3Pt, 6-7 FT) in Dallas' Game 4 loss to the Thunder. He added two rebounds and one assist in 38 minutes played.

After a rough start to the series, Matthews is averaging 20.5 points in the last two games. The total is even more impressive considering the veteran guard is shadowing Kevin Durant on the defensive side of the ball. Matthews and his Dallas teammates will look to avoid elimination Monday.

Although he struggled from downtown, Matthews played terrific defense on Kevin Durant, including a hustle strip that led to a crucial layup which ultimately won Dallas the game. Matthews should be expected to log heavy minutes for the duration of the series, but he is likely to be more valuable for his defense than he is to fantasy owners unless he can get his outside shot to fall.

Matthews appeared to cure his season-long shooting woes in the Mavericks' mad dash for the playoffs over the last three weeks of the campaign, but his inaccuracy reared its ugly head again Saturday. The 29-year-old will be one of many players who'll need to step up in Game 2 to avoid a likely insurmountable hole.

It's been a encouraging season for the 29-year-old, who returned from a devastating Achilles injury last season and has put up solid scoring numbers all season. He's now averaging 14.8 points and shooting 45.5 percent from three-point range over his last dozen games.
