The last time that this flared up, it flared up the day after he pitched."

He has also surrendered a league-leading seven home runs. Rodriguez has struggled to throw with his usual velocity. The Pirates hope some rest will make their lefty better in the long run.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle admitted Tuesday that the club is keeping an eye on Wandy Rodriguez's velocity. Rodriguez is averaging 87.5 mph with his fastball, which is down about two mph. And not only is his heater down a couple ticks, he's been missing his spots. "The mistakes are getting covered and getting hit over the wall," Hurdle said. "It's a challenging time for him." Hurdle thinks Rodriguez could get his velocity back once the weather warms up, and the feeling is that the left has some leash before the club considers booting him from the rotation.

Wandy Rodriguez gave up six runs in five innings Monday versus the Reds. Rodriguez gave up three of the 10 homers that were hit in the six innings before the game was suspended. He's sitting on a 7.31 ERA after three starts, and the Pirates are going to have to seriously think about moving on from him and giving Jeff Locke a shot before much longer. Pitching with an arthritic elbow, Rodriguez's stuff just isn't what it used to be.
