May gave up four runs over 4.2 innings, including two home runs, with two strikeouts and one walk in Friday's spring training loss to Pittsburgh. With his poor start, it appears Tommy Milone is the favorite to win the fifth starter role, MLB.com reports.
The Twins said they'd likely decide who will be the fifth starter on Saturday. Milone, May and Mike Pelfrey are in competition in the job and all three still have a shot. However, Pelfrey isn't set to start an upcoming game and May can be sent to the minors, so Milone may be the winner.

Tommy Milone and Mike Pelfrey have emerged as the top candidates for Minnesota's fifth starter job ahead of May, MLB.com reports.
Alex Meyer was sent to minor league camp Friday and Tim Stauffer was sent to the bullpen. May remains in the mix, but is seen behind the top two candidates. May has given up one run in two innings with four strikeouts this spring. While May has strong numbers, he's likely third in the battle since he can be optioned to the minors.

May, who is recovering from the flu, hopes to pitch in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
The illness limited May's involvement at camp the last few days, but the Twins seem to feel good about the hurler's health after he tossed a bullpen session Friday. Assuming he continues to progress well over the weekend, May should be poised to get on the mound Wednesday as he looks to make up ground in the competition for the fifth starter gig.

May is not being considered for a bullpen role if he loses out on the fifth starter role, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
May will compete with Alex Meyer, Tommy Milone, Mike Pelfrey and Tim Stauffer for the fifth starter role. Despite his struggles in the majors last season (7.88 ERA), May maintained his strong strikeout rate (8.7 K/9) from the minors where he had a 2.84 ERA at Triple-A Rochester. He's likely to lose the battle for the fifth starter role and begin the season at Triple-A, but the battle for the last rotation spot is wide open.

May pitched six innings of three-run ball in Thursday's start at Detroit. He scattered five hits and struck out seven.
Despite an ugly 7.88 ERA, May showed flashes of promise at times this season, with a nice strikeout rate (44 Ks in 45.2 innings). Even though he walks too many batters, he represents something unique for the Twins, as they don't really have many strikeout artists in their organization. Therefore, he could have a shot at a rotation spot next year, assuming he can work on his control.

May allowed two runs on five hits while walking four and fanning three over five innings in a win over the Indians on Tuesday.
The win brings May's record to 2-4 on the season to go with a hideous 8.38 ERA and 2.07 WHIP through 29 innings. He's slated to next take the mound Sunday against the White Sox

May was rocked for eight runs on six hits, walking one and striking out eight over 4.2 innings of a 9-1 loss to Baltimore on Friday night.
May (0-4, 10.42 ERA) has been battered in each start while the Twins give him a taste of the Major Leagues. He was coasting along through the first three innings before the wheels came off in the fourth. He has some ability, but the rude welcome has likely been a test of his confidence so he is not a good play until he gets settled in as we enter the final month of the regular season.

May gave up five earned runs on 11 hits while not issuing a walk and striking out four in 5.1 innings against the Tigers on Saturday, taking the loss.
On the bright side, May -- who was making his fourth career major-league appearance -- didn't walk a batter for the first time after allowing 13 in the previous nine innings. However, the 11 hits were the most he's allowed and he's yet to land in the win column (0-3) since making his debut on August 9. May is currently slotted to take on the Orioles at Camden Yards in his next start Friday.

May will start Game 2 of the Twins' doubleheader Saturday against the Tigers, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.
May has given up five earned runs on 10 hits and six walks in seven innings over his last two starts, and against the Tigers, it's best to keep him on your bench or on waivers and see if he can figure things out. If he were to struggle again Saturday, it's possible the Twins could pull him from the rotation to make sure his confidence doesn't get too shaken.
