Wright will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
It's unclear when Wright will go under the knife, as he's waiting to hear back on a second opinion to determine if he can wait until after the World Series. Wright underwent surgery on his same left knee in May of 2017. A timetable for his return should emerge after the procedure is completed. Wright posted a 2.68 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 42:26 K:BB across 53.2 innings during the regular season but was removed from the postseason roster before making an appearance.

Wright (knee) was taken off Boston's ALDS roster prior to Game 2 on Saturday, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports.
EDGE Analysis
As expected, Wright was removed from the active roster in order to make room for another reliever (Heath Hembree) for the remainder of the series against New York. Due to this move, Wright will not be available to rejoin the roster in the ALCS should Boston defeat the Yankees. Though Wright has not been ruled out for the rest of the postseason at this point -- more should be known following his appointment with a specialist next week -- the World Series is the only round that he will be eligible to return in following this decision.

Wright (knee) will not be available for the remainder of the ALDS against the Yankees. When the series moves to New York following Game 2 on Saturday, he will visit his knee specialist to determine the severity of his injury, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports.
EDGE Analysis
Wright underwent an MRI on the knee Friday night after the Red Sox took Game 1 in Boston, though the results of that test have yet to be revealed. The right-hander didn't appear during Friday's contest, so it's unknown as to when this issue first came about. Look for an update on Wright's status following the appointment with his specialist. If the Red Sox wind up replacing Wright on the active 25-man roster, he will not be available to pitch in the ALCS should the club advance.

Wright (3-1) pitched three scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out two to pick up the win over the Yankees on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
The Yankees had just erased Boston's lead in the fourth inning when Giancarlo Stanton unloaded a grand slam off Heath Hembree, and it looked like the Red Sox's plan to clinch the AL East might have to wait. Then Steven Wright entered. He slowed down the Yankees lineup between the fifth and seventh innings, his knuckler causing them to take some horrific swings, and allowed Boston's bats reclaim the lead. He hasn't allowed a run since being activated from the disabled list Sept. 3, a span of seven games and 10 innings. Wright will clearly be a weapon in the postseason, whether he's needed to relieve an ineffective starter early or pitch multiple innings late.

Wright allowed a walk and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday against the Mets, as he secured the save.
EDGE Analysis
Wright was called upon in the ninth inning for his first save opportunity of the season. Craig Kimbrel was likely unavailable, given he'd collected saves in three of the previous four days. Wright has been solid in relief since being removed from the starting rotation, recording six scoreless appearances (seven innings) while fanning four. He's posted a 2.87 ERA with 35 strikeouts through 47 innings this season.

Wright allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless eighth inning in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Blue Jays.
EDGE Analysis
Wright has been used in key situations the last two times out, which is odd for a knuckleballer. However, Wright is able to get the pitch in the zone, and manager Alex Cora desperately needs someone to become a reliable eighth-inning bridge to closer Craig Kimbrel. Matt Barnes (hip) might be that guy when he returns, but it doesn't hurt to have more than one setup man.

Wright allowed two hits and a walk over two scoreless innings in Sunday's 6-5 win over Houston.
EDGE Analysis
Wright entered a tied game in the seventh inning against a good-hitting team while trying to prevent the Red Sox from being swept. That may not be the definition of high-leverage situation, but it was an important one for the Red Sox. The situation, coupled with Wright throwing multiple innings for the first time since his most recent return from a knee injury, suggests manager Alex Cora trusts Wright in important situations.

Wright worked around hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless sixth inning in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Braves.
EDGE Analysis
Wright made his second appearance in as many days, suggesting he's ready for a normal workload following a stint on the disabled list due to a knee injury. It's too soon to tell if Wright can be a consistently effective reliever, but the Red Sox could really use a steady hand in the bullpen.

Wright allowed one hit in a scoreless inning in Monday's 8-2 win over Atlanta.
EDGE Analysis
Wright made his first appearance since being activated from the disabled list. Although Wright threw just one inning -- the fifth -- manager Alex Cora envisions using him for multiple innings and high-leverage situations, reports Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald. Cora also sees the value of his knuckleball as a change of pace, capable of confounding hitters.

Wright (knee) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
Wright wound up missing a little more than two months with a knee injury, but he's ready to rejoin the Red Sox after getting through a simulated game with no issues Friday. The veteran southpaw will start out in a lower-leverage relief role, but manager Alex Cora said he won't be afraid to use Wright in high-leverage situations once he gets a few successful appearances under his belt. He owns a 2.25 ERA across 16 innings as a reliever this season.
